Default Best Place to Find Used Subaru at Good Price

I have an opportunity to purchase a used Scoob, but I don't want to get ripped off by a dealer (we've got some pretty heinous ones down here because of all the military guys). I'm looking for a wagon - Legacy, Forrester, Outback - trying to stay away from the 98-99 2.5L DOHC engine. I was hoping to find something soon.

Anyone have any good suggestions as to an honest dealer or known good guy personal seller in my area? Perry doesn't handle cars as old as I would need to buy. I have a spending cap.

Thanks for any good info you have to share.

Heh, in my dreams. Just looking at that thread makes me drool uncontrollably.

Thanks for the great info, but my maximum funds only suit pre-2001 cars (possibly pre-2000). Did I mention I'm in Hampton Roads, VA? My sister is in Montgomery County, MD so if there was something good off the beltway she could probably go check it out for me.

Check out Perry Subaru. I don't know what they have though. I wouldn't go to RK for anything. If you are looking at a used lot, ask a lot of questions and if you don't feel comfortable just leave. If you aren't sure if its modified, come back and ask questions here. The car will still probably be there the next day.

I'm with you on the RK thing. I wouldn't trust them to clean my cat's litter box. We are going to look at a 2003 Forrester at Calvary Cars tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be way over my budget. It's a start though.

We may have a 2000 2.5RS Sedan in Blue Ridge Pearl available soon. Call us tomorrow at 410-840-3555. If you give us a better idea of what you are looking for, we will go to the end of the earth to find it and put you in the drivers seat. Either way, good luck with your search.

Yup! Broke my heart when he called me. IAG is on the case, so I'm hoping they can assist before I have to make a decision. I REALLY don't want to have to buy a Toyota.

I ran across this, but I know you wouldn't buy it. I would make a project car out of it.

I don't think I've ever seen a car with 270,000 miles on it!

Speaking of cars falling apart, I tempted fate by stopping at RK today just to see if they by chance had ANY Outbacks hanging around. They had one 92 Loyale that was in about as bad condition as my current car was. I had a good laugh.

I also happened to mention to the Sales manager they had a pretty bad reputation. He didn't seem to have a problem with it because it was for some special STIs he got a hold of (gave me the whole "market bears" speech). At least the guy was honest. Got to give him credit for that.

What's funny about RK is before whenever I needed to get the Impreza serviced they were very unhelpful about getting there and back. So we always took the car all the way down to Perry because they would drive me back home and pick me back up later. RK is like 5-10 minutes away from me. Perry is 20-25 minutes away.

What I don't understand is our air conditioning on the Impreza kept faulting. I took it into RK and they tore the dash board apart and told me I needed to order a $500 computer card to fix it (plus some hideous labor), opened the doors to something and left it on for me so I could use it during the summer. They only charged me $60 to pull the dash and set the doors open. As soon as winter came and I turned the heat on we lost the AC for good.

Until my son started learning how to pull the car apart and put it back together. He pulled the dash apart, fiddled with it and now he has air conditioning he can turn on and off. It will only come out certain vents, but at least he can control it. I would have been happy to pay RK $60 every year to open my vents, but they wouldn't go for it.

PMed. I am SOOOO there if none of the dealers finds me anything locally over the weekend. I'm bringing my laptop so I can check out the KBB while we're at the dealer! Some of these dealers are tripping. Richmond seems to be unusually Outback rich. Dealers seem to eBay cars more from Richmond too (as opposed to HR).

What problems have you had with them? I just want to make sure I clarify any past issues and how they're going address those if they do wind up finding me the perfect car. If it's something they're not going to budge on, I'll let the car go. It's bad enough people try to take advantage of me as it is.

My Nissan I had before the Thanksgiving Noreaster last year ate it up had blown a fuse. It wouldn't start and I just didn't think to check the fuse box because it sounded like it wouldn't turn over. I had it towed to the Nissan dealer here in Virginia Beach and they said they'd have to do a $500 maintenance service on it before they could even make a guess at why it wouldn't start. I ended up having to call the Sales Manager over there to tell him what a crock of #*^% this guy was trying to feed me. He made them give me my car back without charging me anything.

When I got it back they had broken off one of the screws in the distributor cap trying to get it out so the bottom of it was stuck in the hole and had to be drilled out. When I took it to London Bridge Auto, the guy knew it was the fuse in like 2 minutes time. And the Nissan dealer was going to charge me $500 when all that needed to be changed was a frickin fuse. There are very few things I hate about being a woman, but car dealers trying to take advantage of me seems to be their classic MO.

Try IAG sometime... Its like buying from a private owner (price wise), with some added "dealer style" benefits for the future.
