Default Fuel problems with 1995 Legacy

I have a 95 legacy sedan that's recently started having what appears to be fuel system problems. It started with the engine speed dipping and then going back up by driving occasionally, then got worse, then it even started stalling sometimes, but it was always only sometimes, never consistant. I took it in and they said it was the fuel pressure regulator (makes sense), and they replaced it. Well two days later I started having very similar problems, I took it back, and they said there was a loose vacuum hose.

For about 2 weeks it was fine, then it started having very rough idlin problems, but only right after I would start it, and only when it had been sitting in the sun all day. It would start up and go between 4-800 rpm and feel like it was going to stall, with white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I would press the gas, and it would start idling fine, but it would smell heavily of gas.

It was working totally fine besides that, but after the third day of that happening it started having very similar problems to the first time, this time stalling at a red light and not wanting to start for about 3 minutes. IT finally did, and I noticed I had low gas, so I filled the tank (but It was NOT totally empty, I still had at least a few gallons I think) and the problem went away, temporarily.

I then put fuel injector cleaner in the tank and cleaned the throttle body with cleaner, but soon after the problems came back, once again VERY intermittantly. Ond day I drove it 50 miles no problems, the next day I was sitting at a red light and turned on the AC and the car died and wouldn't start for a few minutes, just like the last time. It then had trouble starting for the rest of the day.

I took it into the mechanic and he spent an hour on it but couldn't find anything wrong because it wasn't having the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas? I mean, it could be the fuel pump, the injectors, the idle speed motor, the distributor, blah blah blah the list goes on of things it could potentially be. It's very frustrating, because 95% of the time the car is totally fine.

You don't have a distributor for starters...

I'd start with the fuel filter. Might want to also take apart the fuel assembly and pump the fuel pump a few times into a bucket to make sure it's delivering readily.

Don't hesitate to check spark plugs & wires, but if the problem is so intermittent, I doubt it's that.

The fuel filter, I'm fairly sure, was replaced when they replaced the fuel pressure regulator.

I'm wondering if my MAF might be fluky?

Are you getting a Check Engine Light? Do you know what codes it throws, if any? That might help narrow it down. What kind of gas mileage are you getting?

It only gets a check engine light when it stalls, but then it goes away after it restarts. Anyway I should be selling it to someone today, so it's not my problem anymore (yes, they know about the problem).

I know this is way old, but did you ever put an OBD on it? Any codes showing up? When the fuel injectors die on mine, that's the behavior I get. It it's malfunctioning enough, then a code should be generated.
