I've started to notice to hear the rear brakes seem to be rubbing or something (notice it when you apply the brakes gradually.. thump..thump.. rubbing noise).. any clues? Is it the brake pads are worn or the calipers are rusted out?
Another thing is once in a while I'll hear a banging noise from the front driver side similar to a loose rod dangling back and forth. Usually occurs when you come to a stop or accelerate slowly. One more question, is anyone hearing low buzzing/whining noise from their A/C fan turned on low (ie. 1 and 2). Any setting higher than 2, the noise seems to disappear. thanks,

Our '98 Legacy L Wagon, automatic, AWD, 2.2, ABS developed a rubbing noise from the right (passengers side) rear wheel area yesterday. I have tried using the E-brake a couple of time to see if it was hanging-up but no fix. We had the tires rotated about a week ago, the rear brakes were done by the dealer about 15,000 miles ago. We did drive it in some pretty bad conditions in Northern Mich., Canada, and Buffalo, NY fully loaded about two weeks ago. The car is has "500 miles" left on the Limited drivetrain warranty so if it's a rear wheel bearing or a covered part I want to get it addressed while it is still under warranty! Thanks

You could do an emergency stop on a deserted road/parking lot to see if there's just crud on the surface of the rotors.
The fan noise is pretty much normal. My '98 did it, my '01 does it. . . but a service writer told me to take it in and have the fan replaced under warranty. It's only annoying when I've got somebody else in the car (radio off or low). |

With respect to the rear wheel/brake thumping sound. It apparently went away after I took my car for a wand wash. It might have been some crude sticking to the rotors or something.
Yeah, have them check it out since it's still under warranty. The A/C fan is more of an annoyance than anything else. I wasn't sure if that how it sounded when I first had the car. I'm scheduled for a check up next week. thanks for the replies. |
