Default 30,000 mile service

Being a noob, I don't know if I should take my car in for this service. Or if U guys think I should tackle it myself. Not very mechanically inclined! If U think I should do it. What should I check or replace? Also what oil and filters would be suggested? Thanks

Don't skip a service if you want to keep the warranty.

If you do it yourself, save the receipts and possibly take pictures so that you can prove the service was completed and preserve your warranty.

I took mine in a couple of months ago for my 30K service. From the dealer, it was 200 bucks I think. (boo me now for not DIY or paying too much I don't care) I could have done it myself, but I had no time (55-60 hr work weeks) and they gave me a loaner so I could continue to go to work.

I bet you could whittle that price down significantly if you had just the essentials done. If you mention 30K service they immediately charge you the price for that job. If you find out what the 30k service entails and order the essentials from them (oil change, tranny fluid, etc.) , maybe they would charge you less.

According to service manual:

Inspect:
Drive Belts
Camshaft Drive Belt
Fuel Line
Cooling System
Clutch System
Transmission oil
ATF
Front & Rear Diff Fluid
Brake Lines
Brake Pads and Discs
Parking Brake
Suspension
Axel Boots & Joints
Tire Rotation
Steering System

Replace:
Engine Oil
Oil Filter
Spark Plugs (non-turbo)
Air Cleaning Element (filter)
Coolant
Brake Fluid

The inspection stuff is mostly BS. Should be free since you have a warranty anyway if you ask me.

The other stuff is not that complex, but should be done.

If I understand correctly, you can have another shop do the work, and by law they cannot void your warranty for doing so. This may be the way to go for you, it will be much cheaper in all likelihood.

Handy dandy linky:

http://www.subaru.com/owners/schedul...=SCHEDULE_2006

(Go to the bottom and click "Click here for Schedule of 2006MY Federal and California Specification Vehicles")

That being said, it's pretty easy to do everything listed yourself. You'll save a good $300 as well.

EDIT: Wait, WHAT?!

The CHEAPEST place I could find back in DC to do the 30K was $650.. some dealers wanted >$1000. Hence why I ate a Saturday and the wrath of the WAPCE to do it myself.

GOD I love it out here...

Where did you take your car for a $200 30k service??

.... waiting to hear if Racingfish has anything to say about this.
