Default WRX develops chirp noise?

My 4500 mile old WRX developed a chirping noise when you mildly rev the engine. The chirp noise is actually heard when the engine finally settles back down to normal idle rpm after a rev. The dealer has recently changed out a bad cam sensor which had caused a CEL. Other than take the car back to the dealer or dumb bird jokes, does anyone have any helpful experience correcting this problem? Would a ECU reset do any good?

It's Blue, ok?

Default

you might have a boost leak. An ECU reset would do nothing.

I hear it too sometimes in the same conditions stated. Car feels fine, could it be an exhuast leak?

Default me too

Squeaky chirp when idle reving in the garage after driving home. Tap and release the gas pedal quickly from idle to hear it in the engine compartment. Not too worried it runs great. If I find it, I'll post it. 11,000miles now.

Default the noise comes out of the muffler

The stock muffler can make that noise.

talk to steve_d. he has the same thing, as do I.

I noticed it after removing the pre-muffler resonator but not sure if it was coincidental. The chirp happens under light revving as the needle is around 1500rpms.

Plain old blue!

Default Any resolution?

Has there been any resolution to this? I had a chirping noise which actually sounded almost exactly like a cricket. It has since developed into a dull clicking noise. It is most noticeable at idle.

Cheers, Joe

see if your belts are loose...if you had major work done recently maybe they didn't tighten the belt right when they were done.

It is the stock exhaust. Sounds like a small chirp.

I noticed the same thing and got right down under the car while having someone lightly rev it. The noise was most loud right at the exhaust tip. It wasn't the hangers or anything on the outside of the exhaust, but seemed to be coming from the inside. So was it really coming from the muffler? I doubt it. But why would the wastegate be opening at such a low rpm (~3000) under no load? I really don't think that's it.

it's NOT the wastegate.

it's just the stock muffler.

I have it as well. I do have the stock exchaust. It did not have it when I had my M2 exchaust. I thought it was a leak but the car runs fine.

cheers

I'd tend to agree with you, but any speculation on why the muffler would be chirping?

I'm a little skeptical that it's the muffler as there's no sound coming from the back of (or underneath) the car. In addition this sound is cyclical. Think of a cricket and apply some negative varispeed (for you non-audio geeks that means slow the recording down ) and that is what I hear. If it was the muffler I would expect it to happen on most WRX's and I would expect it to be more of a constant sound (like George Jetson's... car???). In additnion this chirping sometimes manifests itself as a dull clicking. The belt theory sounds the most plausible.

I'm tellin' ya, my car has a major identity crisis. It thinks it's a freakin' cricket. I don't know of many crickets that hang out in fields where the ground is like pavement and the grass and trees look like orange triangular cylindrical like things. At least it doesn't hop.

mine only does it at 1500rpms while letting off.

with my glasspack, i don't hear the chirping (of course, i don't hear much of anything besides the exhaust noise with that thing). I am under the impression it's some kind of airflow thing in the stock muffler... The ticking noise others are hearing i think is something different.

I DO have a George Jetson sound too, but that's because I'm catless and I hear the turbo fins chopping the exhaust at around 3krpms under light acceleration.

Mines chirping too. Throttle blips to 1500 rpms when car is warm, chirps on the way back down to idle.

I'm leaning towards an exhaust leak or exhaust hanger as the cause.

Someone found a loose metal wiring harness connector that was scraping on the floorpan as the cause of his. Acutally wore throught the undercoat and was metal on metal.

same problem. rev to 1500 then let it chirp all the way back to idle.

im guessing its an exhaust leak, cause i developed one after installing stage zero.

any other guesses on the fix to this prob?

Its not an exhaust leak or the stock muffler.

I had it with the stock exhaust since I bought the car.
I had it with the turboXS turbo-back exhaust (except louder)
and I have it now with the turboXS turbo back and upipe.

I dont consider it a problem

although Im just guessing like everybody else (and adding to the confusion) my assumption is that it is something similar or related to the backfiring that most tuned cars exhibit.

...but the car doesn't backfire when you rev it to 2k and then let it drop to idle well at least that doesn't happen w/ my car
