Me and my gal (at the time) leased a Forester in '98, all went well and good, for a while.
She bought it off the lease last spring as we would have been hit pretty hard with mileage penalties and the buy out price was much better than blue book or comparable used '98s and she figured we'd been taking good care of it. No sooner had it turned a little past 60,000 miles and the transmission (automatic) starts making noises and bucking around turns, pretty scary stuff. One independant shop suggested today that she needs a new transmission, now just over a thousand miles off warranty It's going in to the dealer service department Monday, for a second opinion and to see if there is any chance that we might get some sort of coverage, but my hopes are not high... Does anyone have similar experiences regarding "just past" warranty coverage? if so, how was it handled? -Pete

My Jeep had things replaced for free after the wear&tear warranty expired, but only because I had complained about them prior to the actual expiration. Good luck man! |

Just write Subaru a letter, and refuse to pay for the work at the dealer. As long as you did all the proper service (changed fluid), you have a good case. Tell the dealer you want to speak with the SOA people. It is not really up to the dealer, so don't get mad at them (unless they won't put you in touch with the people you need to speak with).
Remember things like "this is rediculous", "I'll never buy a Subaru again, or recommend them to anyone", etc.. if you have too. Paul G. |

In my opinion, and from what I've been shown, Subaru's customer loyalty is a one way street to Subaru of America. As long as you're loyal to them, you're fine. The minute you have a disagreement, you'd better have an attorney on hand to deal with it. That's what I had to do. Basically, they'll have more reason to not do anything if you tell them "this is ridiculous." - It doesn't matter if it makes sense to them or not, it's all about the bottom line and profits. Making you happy only happens if it doesn't interfere with their monetary interests. |

Play it from a safety standpoint. The reprecusions of ignoring a safety concern are far greater than refusing to fix a 'concern'.
Friends of ours had a 88 GM Safari Van. 3 years ago one of them had stoped an a drive way to pick up their kid (with the other kid in the back seat, tied down to the child seat). When she went inside she heard a huge crash. The van had somehow disengaged from park, and under idle driven through the garage door and into the caqr inside! The kid inside was ok, and the shifter still indicated park! Something had let go in the tranny. Long story short, no need for lawyers. GM gave then $10,000 for the van, covered all the damages, and gave them a voucher for manufacturer's cost on a new van (thats about 80% of dealer invoice) If the car isn't safe and its a manufacturer's defect, they'll "remeber" what they have to do. -Pete |

The dealer's tech took it for a test drive and determined the problem was in the "transfer case clutches" (AKA center differential I presume....) they added a "friction modifier" additive to the fluid and say it's all better.
(-Anybody want to comment on this "fix"? )We got it on file with SOA just in case this turns out to be putting a bandage on a major trauma, but she is hoping they were right and this fixed it. Time will tell, no doubt. But the reply we got from SOA was not by any means a "blow off", I'd say they seemed responsive and attentive, so for the time being, I'd say we're satisfied.....so far..... |

Nice to hear SOA is treating you well. I've had no problems with them.
