Default Exhaust leak or what?

Gang,

Lend me some input here please.

I put on a new up pipe yesterday, first one was aftermarket also. I started the car this morning and it runs fine, no cels, visible problems.

Here IS the problem:
I seem to have an exhaust noise coming from somewhere? I cant locate it, all the bolts are tight and its bothering me as I cant figure out why its there in the first place. I rechecked all the bolts/pipe connections today...whats wierd is it sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the car, but who knows? You can chase a noise in a car forever and never find it :P
Also, I have a slight hesistation in second gear, not really a 'bucking' or anything, just hesistates here and there though the RPM band if I am not at WOT. Also, when under full boost (15 psi in 3rd & 4th), I get this high speed humming/vibration from the area of the downpipe. Anyone have any clues? Also, don't know if this helps at all, but my EGTs are lower than before and so is oil temp. I don't know what to make of it.

HELP GANG!!

Thanks!

Marc

Default old trick to find an exhaust leak

Here's an idea that might help you find it.

Put the car up on a rack so you can safely get under it.
With the engine running, have some one place a rag over the exhaust tips.

Try to choke off the flow to create back pressure.

You can create significant exhaust pressure this way at sane RPMs.

If it is a leaking exhaust gasket you should be able to hear a
ssshht ssshht ssshht sound when your under the car.
It is also easier to hear it since the car will be nearly at idle.

The other possibility is to drip a drop or two of oil on or near
the flange you think is leaking. The smoke will sometimes allow you to see the
leak instead of hear it.

Hope this helps ?

Thanks Larry I will try that, do you get a louder overall engine noise with your up pipe? I didnt notice it before, this one is the Perrin up pipe, I like the manufacture of it, but I wish it had studs like the old one did, I think the install would be better, tighter fit, etc.

Default sorry I don't have an upgrade up pipe can't say

Sorry, I'm still running the stock exhaust system.

Our state used to have a safety inspection program and that was
how we had to check for exhaust leaks.

WOW! Thats a great idea on how to check for an exhaust leak... awesome! Thanks hotrod!

Anyway Marc, check your BOV. Al once told me his car made an exhaust leak sound on the drivers side and he traced it to the BPV.

HTH,

Dan

Let me bemore specific on the noise, maybe that will help. Its like I put on an aftermarket exhaust...I mean, you can hear the engine through whatever this is. It isnt a small tapping noise or a higher pitched noise, its like a melon shooter muffler sound...not as loud of course but same sound. Any ideas?

hello,

I've just installed vishnu's uppipe and i'm also hearing this fluttering... almost like a blenderish sound whenever the turbo starts spooling... like in conjunction with the boost... so i'm thinking that its an exhaust leak somwhere... i phear the uppipe portion... so i've only checked the downpipe back... and the very bottom of the uppipe where it connects to the manifold... but there doesn't seem to be a leak there... so i guess the only place left to check is where the turbo meets the uppipe... however, the noise isn't a whistle sounding noise... but it's kinda difficult to really describe... i guess you'd have to be sitting in the car to know what i mean... did anybody else thats installed an uppipe notice any noise increases? and if so... where they really really noticible? thanks.

lestion,

This may sound really stupid, but it helped me narrow down where
an exaust leak was comming from on my original up-pipe. The lower flange was loose causing a really high pitch "squeal". I ran a Sgi Octane microphone
through the firewall which was hooked to my laptop. I then recorded to the hard drive and placed the microphone in different locations to see if I could get a better idea where the sound is comming from. It eventually was placed near the up-pipe where I got the best(clearest/loudest) recording.

The microphone was really small but good quality. I wire tied it to certain locations from keeping it from moving.

Guys @ the dealer got a kick with the microphone. One of the mechanics thought it was some sort of spy device and said that I was possibly listening
