Thumbs up An Impreza for LIFE - help research cure for cancer

Just found this... please join... since the majority of us are techies anyway... we should join. I really think we can put the WWW Impreza team through the top of the list... and give back something to the world... things like this are simple ways to make a difference with just a few lost computer cycles you weren't using anyway.

-Nick

P.S. Please reply to this thread when you join up so we can keep it going! And when setting up your username please include (iClub) in front of your name so we can keep track of who joined from here.

(text copied from Steve's post on Scoobynet)

You may have seen on local news reports of a cancer research program which gives computer owners the opportunity to use their personal computing resources to perform scientific research, such as searching for improved treatments and potential cures for cancer and other diseases, by downloading a computer program to their PCs from the Internet. The program has been developed specifically to search for new drugs to treat leukemia. As the program runs, it uses your computer to begin processing a small packet of data. Once processing is complete (about a day later), the program sends the results back to a server and requests a new packet of data. If you aren't online when the processing is done, your computer will wait to send and receive data packets until the next time you're connected to the Internet.

The research program operates in the background, so you shouldn't notice it's running during computer use. It's designed to run only when computing resources are unused. As soon as you run an application that needs computing power, the research program will back down, and your computing performance will not be noticeably impacted. You do not need to leave your PC running either. Just use your PC as normal, turning it on and off as you would. Obviously though, if you do leave your PC on, it will process more data.

So how can you join up?

1. Visit the Intel sponsored LIFE page and download the program today. http://www.intel.com/cure

2. Run the program and it will set itself up and you will need to choose a user name and password.

Now the fun bit...

3. Join the growing band of Impreza enthusiasts by joining the IWOC team. It would be great to see the Impreza team get into the top ten and Impreza Owners seen to be doing something about this terrible disease.

You can see how we are getting on and join our team by looking here http://members.ud.com/services/teams...F-F7E54398A3C2

I am going to change the description of the team to mention members of Scoobynet also.

A BBC press release can be found here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/hea...00/1255804.stm

Thank you for taking time to read this, and I hope you will consider joining the fight against cancer. It is estimated that 1 in 4 of us will be stricken with the disease at sometime in our lives. Hope to see you signing up. It is for a worthwhile cause.

Regards

Steve

I joined too. My computer is on 24/7 so hopefully that will help out. I have a few more computers too, as long as intel doesn't mind their client running on AMD devices, I might just install it there as well.

Thanks for the support. We have made the bottom of the front page of teams taking part. Now for the long climb!

So far the Impreza team has donated just over ONE YEARS worth of PC processing power to the search for a cure.

Regards

Steve
ps the team description now encompasses the members of the Dutch Subaru Club, i-Club, Scoobynet and IWOC. Next stop Australia....

It won't post your "points" until you are completed with a packet.

6% at 5 hours... these could take a while on this crappy laptop.

Heh, my 'Overall Performance' is rated 23 :-x...And that button with the ! on it (application) is cool cause you can see the proteins and whatnot...I think I'll put this on my laptop and bring it to work (with my T1 line , my laptop NEVER shuts down)...Better go see if they have a mac version...Doh, it's still in the works...Well, as soon as they finish their mac version I'll be running that 24 hours a day 7 days a week on my laptop..and that's really no joke Onward for cancer research!

I would think twice about running UD, or SETI on a laptop, or on an overclocked box. Many notebooks were not designed with an idea that users will run processor-intensive applications on it.

My uncle - bio-physichist fried his brand-new laptop because he asked it to crunch some scientific data overnight (100% CPU for hours). When he checked his laptop next morning it was a cold turkey.

UD will run at 100% cpu utilization. You better be sure that its heat management can handle BBQ heat.

Desktopts are better suited for such tasks, rack systems are even better.

One more thing, UD does not use 100% of your CPU time to do cancer research. When you sign up you also agree to donate your CPU time to UD which in turn will sell some of it for profit to other companies. Unlike SETI, UD is not a non-profit organization.

Please don't flame me, I am also very concerned about finding a cure for cancer.

I also joined, what the hell eh?

I scored a 59.

(2x1002MHz P3s on an ABIT VP6, 384mb RAM, etc...)

I am disappointed, it's hardly SMP aware and my CPUs aren't being totally taxed...
