Carlson is a good dealership. When I bought there, they had a "no test drive" policy for the WRX, which was lame, but they've probably gotten rid of that by now. They have competitive prices and good service, but Santa Cruz is probably still the best, from what I hear.

I got mine from Carlsen. They were great. I personally thought that the no test drive policy was a benift. This way you know that the car you are getting hasn't been abused by all the people test driving it. I got one sitting on the lot that only had 12 miles on it. I had a good experiance buying from them, and would recomend them.

I went there to check out the WRX in November. At that time they were still holding to the "no test-drive" policy for the WRX. The demo RS had its clutch fried quite thoroughly by some old lady just before I drove it, but at least I got a good sense of the handling dynamics. There is some advantage to knowing that your car hasn't been driven so badly before you buy it.

Also, curiously, the salesman quoted me a price at 3.99% above MSRP. It was a little strange, because I've never heard that figure in relation to Carlsen when I've read messages on the forums here; I usually see $600-700 above invoice quoted for them. I ended up buying from Bianco instead.

I picked up my WRX from Carlsen just last week - and other than waiting 3 weeks for my baby to come in from the factory, no complaints here. Pretty laid back place. No pressure sales at all - at least from my salesman.

Earlier this month their prices were "4% over invoice" which as of last week changed to "invoice + $350" which is what I paid. I don't know if this is a limited time thing or what.

For the Gold Plus extended warranties they'll charge you full MSRP, but if you buy it from them and even up never using it over the duration of the plan they'll refund 75% of the plan purchase price.

They do have at least 1 test-drive WRX on the lot which I took for a drive. (However, being that my previous new car purchase was a 97 Outback I was happy with Subaru, so once I saw the WRX in person I knew I wanted it, even before the test drive).

I took they keys with only 4 miles on mine. Had a light drive up hwy 1 north from the city to help count up to those 1000 miles, and I've got a big stupid grin plastered across my face. Come the end of the break-in period I'll have much more fun on that stretch of road.

I bought mine from Carlsen back in October 2001. I'm from Fresno so I called a bunch of place in the San Jose area and right away Warren(great guy), sales manager, was nice and gave me a deal. Maybe not the best deal but after comparing with 3 other places, I went ahead, told him on Thursday I would be there the next day to pick it up. Everything was ready. We stayed there for max 45 minutes and drove back home with my Wife. The most pleasant experience. But yeah, that helps when you are preapproved by your bank with the full amount and just walk there and pick up your car. No more BS at this point.

If you go there, deal with Warren Novak.

Hey Neo/Ticrab - Just got off the phone with Warren Novak. The chat was basically a no BS discussion of inventory, scheduled shipments and option pricing. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Warren is the man!

BTW, the $350 over invoice pricing is still in effect.

Cheers

Glad I could help. It could be somehow better somewhere else but by the time I called Warren I was already frustrated with some other places. And he was fair and straight to the point.

Thumbs up

I picked up my WRX this weekend. I had spoken to Larry Fung, sales manager and an Iclub member. Larry is a very pleasant guy to deal with, and he also owns a WRX. They are presently selling them for $300. over invoice. You can't beat that. I came in and looked at the car, did the paperwork, no bs, and was out in about 45 minutes. They make it extremely easy for you. If you are seriously looking to purchase a Subaru, drive to Redwood City and visit Larry Fung. Thanks Larry,
Ken

Hi, guys, I'm planning to get a WRX in a couple months. Just doing some research right now. When you say $350 over invoice, is it out the door or before tax? What kind of option there is?

thx.

yo.. go to larry fung.. carlsen subaru at redwood city

$250 over invoice

let's say car msrp is 24,500 (example)
and invoice price is 22,500 (example)

then 250 over invoice is = 22,500 +250 = 22,750$ + TAX = your price

instead of 24,500 + tax

Carlsen Subaru.. ask for Larry..

This place rocks. I got my Rex over the phone, $300 over invoice. Financed via fax and picked it up two days later. In and out in 1 hr.

Warren Novak is a standup sales person there.

Thumbs up Great Service!

Well we didn't buy our car from there but when the transmission failed I took it there as I had been to see these guys before.

So here's the deal, the shop car is mildly modified both engine and suspension wise.

When taking the car there I was asked if it was modified to which I replied yes and ran through the list with the Robert in the service department, he said we'll take a look and let me know.

Turns out we had a busted 1st gear syncro and some other internals where worn.

I got a call back saying it would be done under warranty.

Great service from the get go!

Mike

That's good to know. I bought my car there but live in Fresno. I really take care of it and don't drive it as hard as some other people do. In case something happens, I can take it to either place. Herwaldt Subaru in Fresno have great guys working in the shop as well from what I heard.

Default Carlsen

No...I don't have a WRX yet, but am too close to getting one. Carlsen was the first dealership I went to. They gave me ZERO pressure and had no haggle pricing which in the end was pretty reasonable. They didn't have the selection of cars I wanted, but they did have some nice options. I have to take a trip to Santa Cruz and perhaps one more dealership before I make my purchase. BTW, I went to Stevens Creek Auto Imports tonight, OMG what liars!!!

Went there for 3K mile service. Very professional assistance and Kevin and The Subaru Gang are beyond what you would expect. I give them highest recommendation and strongly recommend everyone to bring their cars there for professional and dependable service.

Thumbs up Excellent service

I was 80% through a roadtrip from Seattle to Denver to SF Bay Area when the CEL came on; having heard to avoid Stevens Creek, I took my OBS up to Carlsen. They were excellent, provided a free shuttle ride back to Palo Alto, and FedExd my ECU to New Jersey and back for the reprogram in 3 days so the car would be ready by my departure date. Too bad I don't live in the Bay Area anymore...

Bought my wrx from Larry not too long ago. He didn't take me out for a ride in his wrx But then again, I didn't ask
Great car buying experience, the whole process only took about an hour, compared to the 4-5 hours it would take with other dealerships (i.e Honda, Acura, Dodge, etc) because of the negotiating process.
Btw, they still have a no test drive policy but have demo cars for you to try.

i know he is the legendary down hill drift king. I meet him once on Hwy 9 and he went down hill so fast...I won't even catch his tail lights. And his stoptech has some serious stopping power so he won't hit all the deers on the road.

Got my car from Larry, he is a fast race car driver and now he is racing with his subaru now. I guess he would quit shortly so he could be a rally car racer for subaru next year.
