Question 2005 Legacy question (audio)

Having starting to look at the legacy a bit more I just thought about something.. you can't put a aftermarket radio in can you?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! well yes and no. on the LGT models you cannot because the hvac is built into the stereo and it blows. i have a line-driver hooked into an EQ thats hooked into my amp and it works ok. much better than stock, but still lacking.

the outback XT has the same engine as the GT and you can get some coilovers and drop it a bit and it looks pretty good, and you can run aftermarket headunits. the foresterXT has a retarded STI engine.

I love my LGT but i kinda wish i woulda looked harder at the foresterXT after driving my friends.

let me know if you got more Q's or need some pics of my setup.

What other places can you mount the headunit? for a 2005 I was going to put a aftermarket nav system in the spot with the cubby hole after I change the face.

there isnt any other place, unless you put it in the glove box or something. you can get an "all in one" unit that will do nav + audio/video and bypass the stock stereo.

You could get the Spec B faceplate which would give you an opening for a Nav. system.

If you get the manual climate controls, you can upgrade the head unit with a kit like the one at the ebay link above. If you get the dual-zone automated climate controls, you're pretty much stuck with the factory head unit. The climate controls and radio/CD controls are all on the same circuit board. I think the turbo (GT) models all have the dual-zone climate control, but I'm not certain.

You can still upgrade the amp(s) & speakers with the factory head unit of course.

One guy chopped up the circuit board and relocated the top half to make room for an aftermarket head unit (or CarPC display, I forgot which). The results looks awesome but it would be big $ or lots and lots of work to do that to your own car.

If you have an '05 with the integrated climate/stereo setup you may be able to put in an '06 head unit to play MP3 discs. The swap is easy, but finding an '06 head unit may or may not be. They were popping up on ebay for a while, I upgraded mine.

And yes you can put an aftermarket 1- or 2-DIN head unit in cubby spot. I suspect that a good fabricator could put some gauges or something where the stock radio controls are, but there isn't much depth to work with.
