Default 97 Legacy L questions

I am looking at getting a 97 Legacy L 2.2L, 5sp, 140k miles mainly for RallyCross, and possibly AutoCross. I know stock it would be a lot better suited for RallyCross, so I was wondering if any of you have experience AutoCrossing your older Legacy's, and how well they work. Also what would be the best/cheapest suspension mods (sway bars??) to make this car better for AutoCross, but still do well in RallyCross? Ride quality isn't a big concern, because I have an 02 Civic as a daily driver.

Also one last thing, as far as I have read, the 2.2L engine doesn't have the head gasket issues, but I just want to make sure that is right, or that this engine isn't prone to other failures of that nature.

Thanks for the help

Best mods to do if you want to compete cross-genre is to have two diff sets of tires. M+S for RallyX, Hi-po Summer for Autox.

A front swaybar upgrade will help with your turn in, likewise a rear will help the car rotate.

The 2.2L doesn't have the HG issues, but it can still overheat if abused.

i autocross and rallycross my 92 legacy L which has the same engine as yours. i do ok in rallycross, and get my arse handed to me in autocross. our cars are great in short tight courses but those sti's eat me alive on any straights. i would say get some new struts, keep your stock springs, upgrade your sways and get some wrx seats to hold you in place.

as far as the engine goes, exhaust/header is about all we can do with our 2.2's.

If you're doing an SCCA event, review the rules for what is allowed for each class. I Autocrossed and Rallycrossed my 98 L Wagon. You won't be nationally competitive or anything in AutoX, but if you stick to H-stock and get some R-compounds on your stock wheels you can do fairly well. Either way, it's lots of fun!
