Default strange steering issue, front left tire on right turns.

i am having a strange steering issue in my 01 rs.

when ever i do a right turn, my left wheel shakes and feels almost as if it's "scrubbing" along the ground, rather than smoothly taking the turn. another way i can put is the feeling you would get from pushing a skateboard along the ground at a 45 degree angle. the wheel is jittery and making lots of vibration.

i can't really think of any other way to describe it! this only happens when turning right, and seems to only give the feeling from the drivers side.

i am lowered, with whiteline G4s, and quite a few other bits, but all the aftermarket parts have been working ok for quite a while.

help?!

Alignment specs?

Did this suddenly start happening, or gradually come on?

it was aligned in the spring, and then not driven for 3.5 months.

Are you getting any unusual tire wear? busted ball joint or fried bearings perhaps?

no unusual tire wear i have noticed, and no sounds that would lend themselves to a busted ball joint. i had one on my previous car, and i'm pretty confident i would noticed the symptons again. especially the whole wheel falling off while driving bit. haha.

fried bearings on the other hand...it's possible. how would i go about checking for this?

Thank you.

Did you ever figure this out? I've noticed my car doing this also, even with different suspensions. I tried shaking the front left wheel with it jacked up and there is no play in the bearing. I'm going to take a closer look tomorrow.

i never actually figured it out, because i ripped everything but the steering rack out and replaced it with swap stuff (ver 4)

however, i was told it was most likely the power steering pump despite the lack of "whine" that you might also hear with a steering pump problem. it could be either too low on fluid, or just broken. try fooling around with that.

good luck!

I think my problem, and yours as well, is from the suspension itself. It feels like the tire is rolling over itself and then hopping across the road. Like when you have a really soft and tall sidewall. I'm going to make sure my wheel bearing isn't the culprit and then look at the control arm.

i'll see if my car is still doing it this week once i get it back. everything but the wheel bearings and steering rack are different.

Sorry to bring this back, but how did you end off with this? Was it the tire rubbing by any chance?

I'm having the same issue. Sounds like the tire is rubbing up against something.

The mechanic says it could be my clutch or my "broken motor mounts".

But I don't think he's got it right.

A friend of mine suggested ball joints or steering rack terminals.

^^I'd like to know to. I thought I had a flat tire pulling into a parking space. I've never flushed/changed/serviced the power steering in my car and I'm @ 118k miles...

i don't actually remember what happened to this.

i think it might have been a problem with the power steering. since changing my motor (ver4 went boom) for the second time, this problem hasn't existed. all the supporting suspension parts remained the same.

sorry for not having a concrete answer! check your power steering pumps first.
