It was a sad day when the Corolla and(Prizm) lost there independent susp.in the rear.I hate seeing cars with a straight axle beam susp.In 98 when Toyota put the new 1.8L in the Corolla it was fun to drive witha 5 speed manual.I hope they can bring some of this back to the new car.

"Toyota hopes to compete with the new Honda Civic and Mazda3 and their high-performance variants."

A 158 HP engine is not going to compete with the MS3. Something is missing here.

There are two different sentences.

I would not be surprised to see a 200 + HP corolla later on to compete against the civic Si. Perhaps a Corolla TRD? Maybe this whole AE86 rebirth will be masked as a Toyota Corolla TRD variant rather than a whole new line?

New platform... Same as current gen Rav4
Current Gen Rav4 Hot engine... 263 HP V6
Having the same engine bay in a lighter car with the capability of AWD... hotness (at least as much as toyota can muster)

And I highly doubt anyone but the domestics will try to take on the MS3 head to head. Maybe Mitsubishi, but probably more a WRX rival.

The Corolla XRS was still a Corolla and would not be taken seriously as a entry level sports car. It just didnt have the goods along with being clumped up in the Corolla family. Plus the suspention on it was not very sporty either. It was just a Corolla with more HP.

I also have my doubts about Scion getting a sports car. Scion, to me, has more of a trendy, urban, hipster mentality than a performance mentality. It is more of a neon lights and sound system tuner than a Turbo and coil over Tuner. I dont know if Scion's target market would even understand the advantages of a light, nimble, "underpowered" car.

I'm pretty sure Toyota doesn't intend to put a 158hp Corolla in the same category as an MS3. What category would they put it in? Maybe the same one as a 156hp Mazda3?

Which one of those makes sense to you?

Uhh I don't think they intended for a 158 hp car to compete with something that has 110 more hp than it, I mean call me crazy but that seems like common sense. Me thinks you'll see a high power version come out sometime later.

That isn't it in the picture. That is the Japanese version. I think they call it the blade.
