Cool 2008 Black WRX mini-photoshoot + review!

Hey Guys! I'm a new member here, but I'm glad to be part of the Subaru community. I recently was involved in an accident with my RSX Type-S and picked up my new scooby as the replacement (Hello torque!). Thought I would post up some pics in here since there only seems to be few 08 picture threads. The MY07 in the pics is my roommates car, so I figured we should have a little mini-shoot (forgive the bluriness, it was getting dark and I have no tripod). Also, since I just got my new WRX, I figured I'd give a sort of extended review of how I like it so far. If any potential buyers are weary of the car I would definitely check out my review, as I was very apprehensive about getting this car at first. Anyway, throughout the review I'm sort of ranting so if you aren't interested stop reading here, but enjoy the pics .

I love my dealer installed Borla muffler!

Plain and simple, I absolutely love my 08! Got a great deal on it, Black WRX hatch, sport grill, premium package, and it even had a borla muffler and tinted windows dealer installed. The borla is really cool, although its just the muffler piece, or at least I think so -- I cant find a single thing about a cat-back made by Borla for the 08, it definitely brings an otherwise quiet car to life. My roommate drives an 07 WRX so I'm pretty familiar with how it feels to ride in as well as drive, and I have to say I'm very happy with how the 08 feels in comparison. To me it still pulls real nice once the turbo spools, which is near instantaneous, as well as being very smooth and quiet at highway speeds. The power delivery lacks the hard punch of the previous WRX, and while power is still plentiful it comes on very linearly. This may turn off some hard core fans, but to me it feels much better suited for daily driving while remaining very sporty. The suspension is noticeably softer than the previous rex through hard turns, however this alternatively makes cruising on poorly maintained roads (abundant here in the desert) much more pleasant. Don't think that soft = poor handling though, to me it seems every bit as capable. I haven't got lots of twisty roads around me to test on, but with the few I have been on so far the car just eats them up. So its got some hunch to its mid-corner stance, nothing a stiff spring cant fix, but for the meantime I'm loving my luxury ride. The road compliance coupled with the quiet interior is truly wonderful if you live in an area with torn up streets, or find yourself on long drives often (it was amazing on a recent drive from L.A. to Tucson). Stopping ability is first rate IMO, however it leaves a little to be desired in the pedal feel department (maybe some stainless-steel brake-lines could fix this?). The steering itself is precise and weighted perfectly, and although the wheel could communicate a slight bit more feedback to the driver, it suffices. All in all, I would rate the driving experience a real 9 out of 10, it really leaves very little to be desired for my driving style. If I had to pick one upgrade that would really make this thing shine I would say some good sticky tires.

Now, on the interior/exterior styling. Obviously, the new look of the 08 has created a pretty big schism with WRX fans -- it certainly seems like a love it or hate it type situation. I personally feel the car can not be appreciated at all until you see it in real life. I wasn't a fan when I first saw it online, but all that changed when I saw it actually sitting in front of me. The only thing I can say is the sport grill should be the only grill; what makes the car look so much like a mazda or toyota is that god awfully boring stock grill. The hood scoop is absolutely massive, its just more integrated into the hood, still unmistakably Subaru if you ask me. The lights still remain very Subaru-ish as well I think, with a strong resemblance to the 06-07 shape. The fenders are also not totally flat as it seems from pictures-- they have a very gradual curve to them and when you stand in front of the car it becomes apparent how wide it really is. I do agree with most on the issue of rear lights being clear, and although I find myself minding less and less about them, they should have been red. The interior is well designed and assembled, as well as being quite roomy. The seats are nice and sporty, while seemingly being a little softer than the previous models IMO. Shifter has some what of a long throw; however, its nothing terrible and easily fixable. The factory sound is hmmm, OK I would say. Lots of loudness and slightly tinny treble, but I suspect the culprit is mostly average quality signal components rather than the drivers. I can't wait to get a good quality head-unit and my sub+amp in it, as I'm sure the speakers can sound A LOT better once the bass frequencies are crossed over to the sub. For now though, it suffices, its really just as good as any other factory audio in the price range. If you like cup holders you will love this car. Things that bother me: no moonroof? C'mon! Window Switch needs to be auto up too! No metal pedals , and no silver trim around the rear passenger door handles (stupid, I know but it bothers me). Things I love: THE GAUGES plus red lighting , The great tray under the HVAC controls, steering wheel controls are convenient, amazingly thick carpet, and awesome cargo space.

All in all, I love this car. I would say to you die-hard WRX fans that really hate it -- dont be so quick to judge. I really think this car is going to impress a lot of people, especially when some after-market parts become available. For now, I'm just waiting for cobb to release some upgraded maps so I can reflash with Tactrix (I'll let someone else try first though ), I really think this thing has LOTS of untapped potential.

So yeah, flame away for me buying a ford focus -- I'm expecting it.

The 08s were really growing on me but the fenders look really small especially after seeing those new sti teaser shots.

I guess you mean the silver plate around the rear door latch like in the front?
Those are available as accessory in Japan. I am sure you can order them through some parts dealers.

Enjoy the car~

Every new model subaru impreza that comes out everyone hates at first lol the 06's I remember how everyone said the car was ruined. It's already won me over after i've seen some modded ones and the red tail light overlay is something that u should look into!

Nope -- black as well, 2005 model. I still do miss some parts of owning that car, but this WRX is really making those memories fade fast.

Out the door 29k.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! I thought I was going to get torn a new one How much do those red vinyls go for? And what is the process of installing them? Also, I like the red but I think a more "smoked" red would really set the car off. One more question, I have heard the Legacy pink STi springs fit? Is it really a direct (and safe) bolt-on? Because if so I would really consider lowering this thing very very soon.
I'm anxious to be one of the first with a really sick 08

$29,000, WOW that right there is why I would not buy a new WRX. They are asking way to much for them But your car does look very nice though
