Default High Pitch Grinding Sound When Shifting Into 4th Gear

2006 sti, 15k miles...

Sometimes when I'm shifting into 4th gear i hear a high pitch gear-grinding sound.

The best way I can describe the sound is like when you are drilling in drywall screws and your get to the very end of the screw going into the drywall/stud... it makes a 1/2 second *ehnt* noise... which means you can't screw it in any further... make sense?

My mechanic told me that when you press the clutch sometimes there is a possibility that air is getting in there in which case the hydraulics to not fully engaging the clutch ???

Does this make any sense? Wouldn't it then do it all the time?

I'm confused.. it's only done this about 5 times so far over the past few months...

Your thoughts?

I would take it to the dealer and let them look at it...there is no way air is in there like that....that's just stupid!

Is this at high speed or just calm regular driving? Possibly a worn syncro? I know wrx's have a high speed 4-5 grind occasionally...but I'm not sure about your case.
