News Seems like Toyota is starting to think about performance again! :)

So From what I've been reading, it appears that Toyota is gonna make a new AE86! under $20k, 2200 lbs, RWD, 4-cyl, coupe. I can't wait. New tech into a proven platform, yummy. Also they might make a GS-F, 500 hp V10 Lexus, hells ya! Looks like I may have to trade up the G in a few years.

... I will be pleasantly surprised if we see the new "AE86" in the States. Something about the formula screams "screw you, American crash regulations" to me.

... I hate to be a naysayer, I'd buy one in a second... but I'm just sayin'.

Lexus is planning on an IS-F as well. There's already pics and videos of it. It's pretty insane

It's actually completely developed and ready to go. I think they're building around 1000 for the US market... neat car. 8 speed sequential, 420HP... take that, BMW

word is, the new "ae86" could be subaru powered since they are working together. i don't think it will be a GREAT car...more along the lines of a rwd scion. i mean, a small rwd car is a great step but i imagine it will be very low on power to come in at such a cheap price. rwd = fun. rwd + low hp = not so much.

This will probably be a tuner/aftermarket darling when it comes out, based on the buzz it's been generating. I think it's a great platform to start with, and if they do indeed keep the weight down to about 2200 lbs, power numbers in the low 100 range will be OK. I'm actually quite excited about this, since it really speaks to the types of cars I grew up with in the late 80s and early 90s. A cheap, fun project car for sure w/ Toyota reliability.

Obviously you've never owned an AE86 before. They're like a straight mans' Miata. They were underpowered, but fun as hell in a parking lot. I bought mine for $600, cheapest car I've rebuilt by far. 8K revlimit was nice. I'd prefer lower power stock, it makes for cheaper insurance.

even with low power the ae86 was great.... 15 years ago. dont get me wrong an 86 with a 20v swap is killer. or a turbo 4ag. but having owned one i would have to double the hp if it had less than 200 in it to be "fun" to drive. but a sub 20k rwd will be very sweet. i have wanted to build a drift car so this may be a good platform to go with after a few years of it being out on the market.

i most certainly have...and i agree. fun in a parking lot, boring and slow everyplace else. it will still be underpowered as a daily driver/performance car imo...but who knows exactly what they'll end up with. if it's toyota powered, maybe trd s/c will be an option? i'm sure they'll be a great aftermarket for it but i'm way past even wanting this type of car.

i like the idea, but i picture mostly 18-22 year old kids thinking their the next drift king...and you know what happens next.

... and I think this is ultimately will kill this car, if it ever becomes a reality, in the US. Insurance will be unbelievable, thanks to idiotic parents and horrendous driver education. Sigh... damn kids

That's what I meant, the bandwagon hit hard with the STI, as I feared it would, damn Gran Turismo!

I liked it back when it was only the Lesbians and Crocodile Dundee were really the only ones that were into subarus.

I personally liked the Lesbo's in Legacy Wagons. There's still a ton of them in NM, I think half of Santa Fe are Dykes. I used to catch **** for driving a 91 Legacy, especially when I first moved back to the mainland with my Hawaii plate back in 2000, damn thing had a rainbow on it. But I had a 133db system in there with 3 amps, 4 subs, 12 speakers total, damn thing would pull the air outta your lungs, JL Audio FTMFW!

Like this ? I had an IS350 which I replaced with the STI. If the IS350 would have been a 6-speed and AWD, I would still be driving it for sure. Very quick car... can't imagine what the IS-F is going to be like with 120+hp.

The lack of a proper manual trans kept me from buying an IS350 and got my in my G35S, which I love, But feel it could use another +100HP. Can't wait until toyota get's back on the ball.
