Default Autotranny hunting between gears

Hi folks,
I have a 2000 Outback with 115K miles on it. It's the 4 cylinder car. It has just started a problem with the tranny and I'm hoping it might sound familiar. I've very experianced with working on cars but not Subarus

When accelerating from a stop light or after it has dropped down an gear to go up a hill, it hunts back and forth fairly violently between what I assume to be 3rd gear and 4th gear/overdrive. It does it for a second or so and then settles down.
If I leave the selector in 3rd, there appears to be no hunting and the car accerates smoothly.

I checked the tranny fluid and first let me tell you that thing is hard to read. It "appears" to be actually overfull by a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. The fluid does not appear to be red like I was expecting either. I smelled it and it doesnt smell burnt.

Any thoughts, suggestions? At first blush I'm thinking that clearly this car is overdue for a fluid change but I dont have a clue why it's dark like that (unless, something really bad happened in there). Other than the hunt between 3rd and 4th, it drives like it always has since we brought it home.

Any ideas?? Thanks everyone.........John

New thing is happening. My wife says that the check engine light is blinking now too and it is still doing it (but just not as much) when it's just left in 3rd gear.
If I pick up a OBII scanner, will it also pull any codes for the tranny??

thanks everyone........john

Yes, there are Subaru OBDII codes for the transmission, they are all P07XX or P08XX.

Here are all the codes:

Tranny Fluid inherently smells bad... very bad. The fact that the fluid is dark in color means you need a fluid flush and change. The check engine light will most likely be very vague... But if you post it up I am sure we can figure it out. I have had my fair share of transmission problems.

Okay, finally got the reader to work.

For a quick update, the more we limped it along I started thinking that maybe it's not the tranny thats stumbling but in fact the engine. Recently it began idling poorly and then couple days ago started running really rough so we parked it till I get it fixed.

Here's the codes

P0483 Fan Performance
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Question, does the code reader also read the chassis codes through the same port? If I understand the reader I have, it has that capability if the car supports it.

Thanks for the help guys.....john

Just an FYI, embarrassingly it was not the tranny after all but merely the engine stumbling when under load (right before down shifting). Changed the plugs, fuel filter and air filter and it's is 1000000 percent better.

Thanks everyone

Yeah the cat inefficiency can be anything from a misfire to the o2 sensor going bad. seeing as the misfire was present at the same time, that was probably the issue. the fan performance could be a few things. Most likely its the temp sensor or the thermostat stuck open.

if your tranny fluid isnt red or a slight shade of red, you might want to change it. it only costs like $40 for synthetic and 1-2 hours waiting for the tranny to cool down.

My trans is also hunting, but I think its because of my clutch packs being burned out. I hope you the best of luck with your issue.

Wow was this an eye opener for me. Quick, please make sure your subbie is running correctly.

In my case, it appeared to be clearly a tranny issue because everytime I put it under load the car acted like it was hunting between a couple of gears. Figured we'd limp it along as long as we could ($$$ issues) and low and behold the motor started running so bad it would barely idle.

Found the spark plugs were gone on it. Swapped in some new ones ($1.49 a peice) and this car is like brand new! The hunting under load that I thought was a bad tranny was in fact a heavy miss under load. Go figure. I've been messing with cars for almost 50 years but that one caught me by surprise (pleasent surprise).

Please double check you motor first and good luck.....john

Motor is freshly rebuilt, so my motor is fine. I am sure it's the clutch packs in my trans, thats why its slipping.
