Default '02 OBS- startup issues

First thing in the morning or after the car has been sitting for several hours, if the motor doesn't catch on the first try cranking (ie turn the key a couple seconds) I turn the key back to OFF then try again it'll catch, the revs will go up to ~1200 then they will drop *way* low, it'll act like it wants to die (sort of, ~400-~500rpms) then catch itself and rev back up to ~1200. Is that 'normal'?

I also noticed one morning when I had to start the car to move it ~10 feet when I got out there was a strong unburned fuel smell on the outside of the car. Like it's really dumping fuel for the warmup cycle. "Normal" also?

This is a 2002 OBS, 2.5l, 5sp.

Thanks

I can only reply to the second issue, but yes its fairly normal for that gas smell. The reason I know about this is because of something that happened to me:

My dad moved my car out of the garage to get access to something, so he started it up, moved it 15 feet and shut it off. Later when I tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over. I tried it for a while and finally it caught. I took it to my car dealer and asked the service guys to look at it. They did and talked to me about what happened. They said its a winter phenomenon usually in that people move their cars for the snow plows, but only move it a short distance. What happens when you start your car is that fuel floods in to get it up to operating temps, if you shut your car off too soon you basically end up flooding your engine by not burning off that gas. So now if I have to move my car a short distance I either let it run a few minutes or take it for a spin around the block.

Hope that helps.

Thanks I kinda figured the second issue was a cold start thing, ie normal. The first issue is likely related to the same cold start, dumping fuel, cold cat type thing.

It's not really a problem, I mean I can live with it, just wondering if others has noticed it.
