2007/2008 NBA Thread

With the next NBA season about to start in a few weeks, what are your thoughts on the season?

Some dude on Yahoo Sports has picked the Celtics as the #1 East team. That's quite a jump from adding Garnett. I think they are playoff caliber but I wonder about their PG play.

My beloved Bulls now have an extra team to compete with for the playoffs. Am hoping they take it further this time but the Celtics might have thrown a wrench into those plans.

As for the West, I'm liking the Spurs and Jazz.

It's not just Garnett, it's Garnett and Ray Allen. You take the front-runner for MVP in the east and put him with the best pure shooter in the league. Yeah, they should be good.

BTW, this thread will have like 5 posts total because OT hates the NBA.

im liking all the rookies so far. noah should be an instant positive addition. gray has some potential, and curry could be a solid guard replacement for duhon.

Hamster, you are right about Allen also but he is this | | close to getting hurt again.

yes, sad but true indeed.

look for DJ Strawberry to bring improved D to the team, no one wants to get shown up by a rookie.

Jazz fan here, can't wait for the season to start! Good to hear the OP giving some love to Utah, I also expect us to be excellent this year. I expect the Celtics to win the East and lose to the Spurs, Mavericks or Suns in the finals. Hopefully the Jazz will make the WCF again which is very possible. Especially since Kirilenko is happy, fitting in, and playing well again (went to a preseason game last night)

The thing is, they don't necessarily have to improve. You're talking about a team that was a suspension and possibly some Tim Donaghy playoff calls away from getting to the finals. In an even setting, they just might be the best team in the league.

The Suns have a great excuse every year. I agree that they should have suspended Duncan for getting off the bench as well at a different part of the game, but I don't see how anyone can HONESTLY think that the Suns are a better playoff team than the Spurs. The Suns are an excellent team and would kill the Mavericks but too many of their players choke in the playoffs and just can't get it done. They meet the Spurs this year? Game over.

Possibly, but I think the other teams or at least some have improved. I don't think the Suns were far beyond all the other teams to counter these improvements (if any) by other teams.

BTW, Jerry Buss now says he's willing to trade Kobe. Go to the Bulls Kobe! You can have Gordon and Nocioni.

not to mention we would have man-handled the cavs just as bad if not worse.

Eh, I'm not that worried about it. Buss was basically saying if someone could make the right offer he would pull the trigger, but there isn't much of a realistic setting where someone could provide the right offer. Gordon and Nocioni...not so much.

I'll tell you though, as a Lakers fan, it's frustrating. After all that smoke in the off-season, they've done basically nothing to improve the team. Other than getting rid of Smush (thank god) and picking up Derek Fisher (thank god x2). But they're another marquee player away from having any kind of contention shot, even if they stay healthy. Playing at their full potential, they're maybe the #5 team in the west.

I'm still bitter about not getting Garnett.

If there's such a thing as a "thug" in the league, it's Stephen Jackson.

Yeah, I doubt Kobe goes anywhere. A team would basically have to trade their whole team like the Celtics did, although they traded mostly role players.

Fisher will help, but he's still a horrible shooter. You'll need a lot more than Kobe+Fish+One more good player, unfortunately. Fisher shot something like 36% last year on the Jazz. Granted he is real experienced in Jackson's triangle system.

You mean more than Kobe+Odom. Lamar is an all-star if he stays healthy. But in this day and age you really need three legitimate all-stars to be a top echelon team. San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix, Detroit. Kobe is basically as good as two bottom rung all-stars, but even if Mihm came back healthy, Fisher playing like he did with the Lakers before, Bynum stepping up, Radmonivic playing like he should, they're still not better than Phoenix, Dallas or San Antonio. They can play with those teams, but would have to play perfect to beat them in a series.

Was just about to make this thread before I searched.

I'm looking at the Suns to finally take it all this season. They are as rock solid as they were and now they have Grant Hill. Truly my favorite team in basketball to watch.

On the other hand, my roots are happy that the Celtics are now (finally) back in it. Garnett and Pierce are awesome, but I am truly happy to see Connecticut's own Ray Allen coming back east. Took you long enough Danny Ainge.

I like these guys as well. Even though Jackson is a bit of a liability they shouldn't have let him go I think.
