Have a Nice Day? power steering??? ebrake and batt. light on! whats going on? :(

Well, as im coming home from BK Im just cruisin, normal speed, cc on. All of a sudden i hear a loud whining/whisteling like my intake is just sucking everytime i give gas. anyways I look down at my cluster and see that my batt. light and ebrake light is on..... im like, oh **** wtf... and then as I turn around the corner, i try to turn, and its stiff as ****, im like, wtffff no power steering ftl and so i pull over, turn my car off, wait, and turn it on to see if it could reset itself or w/e, turn it on and see that the lights are still on..... sooo just go all the way home basically... my tranny is feelin a little wierd coming home, and my clutch grab is pretty sooner than normal, What is this problem?? It's night time but tomorrow im going to check my motor, but can anyone find this source? thanks in advance!!

Oh and might I add before this happened, my belts were squeeking for about a week, and the oil change dude said I needed to replace my wheel bearing in a few more thousand miles, but since then I've only gone about 500mi....

Yeah, definitely sounds like a belt problem. I doubt that the belt completely "broke", but it's either shredding or loose. I would check the belt tension and see what kind of shape the belt is in.

From my past experience, my battery and e-brake lights turned on when my alternator wasn't providing any charge to the system (odd how the e-brake light comes on, huh?). So it sounds to me like your alternator belt is slipping to the extent that the alternator pulley isn't turning enough to provide a charge to the car.

Oh, one more thing. I wouldn't drive the car around for very much longer without taking care of this. With the battery/e-brake lights on, it means your car is running on the battery only with little to ZERO alternator charge. Pretty soon you'll have a dead batt - no fun when you're driving and everything goes haywire (and then dies).

not to mention the engine itself won't run without battery power... no power = no fuel pump or injectors

did you check the belt? is it even there? (alternator belt is the one that goes from the main pulley to the left, the other is your AC belt)

^ easy as pie to fix. Same happened to me over the summer.

It's funny, mine exhibited the same symptoms right as i was pulling into my place after a 4 hour drive...I would have been f'd if it broke on the NJ turnpike because it was past midnight.

It was the last turn into the driveway that all of a sudden, the power steering went out and I almost hit the curb.

Might as well replace both - both of the belts are pretty inexpensive and you might as well change the other belt while the P/S/alternator belt is off. It's super easy....

yup alternator belt is what broke... should be around $16-17 from the dealer.

If you feel like it, do the AC (although it's not something that is critical and will leave you stranded if it breaks) about $16 also.

fwiw, I almost bought a pep boys special and it was a couple bucks more than the dealer.

Thanks for all the replies and I went down to the dealership, $32 bucks later and both belts are replaced, and all I have to say is.... so far the squeeking is GONE, car is WAAAAY smooooother, and for some reason I hit peak boost a lot... easier, I didn't know how tight to tighten the belts down but I have them pretty snug, im bringin my 12mm socket wrench with me just in case....

edit: I forgot to check if this solved my AC problem as well, squeeky belt when AC is on, clutch is 3x stiffer when AC is on... It's cold here that's why I didn't check, but next time I go outside i'll be sure to play with the AC to see whats up :P

good deal...not too snug or you'll put too much stress on the bearings.

The belt should deflect about 5mm or so when you push on the center of the span.

Same thing just happened to me (about 1 hour ago). Had the car towed to my house. Oddly, enough, the SAME belt broke on me about 1 year ago. I would think a belt would last longer than that. I checked to see if any of the pulleys were seized. All turn freely. Last time I had it towed to the dealer. This time I'm doing it myself. Very easy job.

Man, that steering gets HEAVY without power assist!
