I could use one, but I'll probably hold off until I build that AMD 1700 system I want. (Asus A7M motherboard, 512 ddrram, ATI 8500 video card, some sort of sound card ish, and about 10 fans) ahhh.... if only I had the funds

Hey man... still might be interested. Just wondering how you can tell it won't be enough for your sytem? 300 watts should be enough for just about anything unless you're running a 5-drive RAID or something.

well, from what I've read, the new high-speed AMD chips require a TON of power to keep running.

I actually tried to turn it on last night, and it did work, though my CD-ROMs were not being seen by the motherboard.

I have also read problems with under-powered AMD boards and chips...and something about the chips burning out quickly that way...so I figure better safe than sorry.

So it should be good enough for most systems...like my last one, which was an AMD 650 with 2 hard drives, and 2 CD-ROMs, this power supply would be quite sufficient.

Yeah, so if you want it, $25 shipped...

Default 300Watt

It will work any athlon on the market. A cpu still uses the same voltage as the 700 athlon. I don`t understand where your getting the crap from about underpowered psu`s burning out the cpus.

The power issue isn't the total wattage. It's the voltage rails. How tightly the power supply can adhere to the 12 or 5 volts it needs to output. An example: Let's says it's pushing 11.9 volts, which would be sufficient. Suddenly, it begins to draw more power. For a split second, the power devlivery drops down to 11.2, before the power supply beefs up the output to bring it bac, to 11.9 again. That causes problems with the AMD chips. The power supply needs to be able to respond quicker, never letting it drop below, say 11.7(these numbers are just examples, not specifics).

It doesn't matter if it's 300 watts or 500 watts, it's how tightly/quickly it can keep the 12 and 5 volts of power going.

i just felt like making a useless information post

gotcha.

but the wattage will make a difference in the peripherals, no? seeing as how I have 2 cd's, and will have 2 hdd's soon...

either way, I've already bought the 400W supply...so that's why I'm just going to try to sell the cheaper of the two

Yep. Total wattage would make a difference in the number of accessories you can run. That's why the higher watting have more Molex connectors. However, 300 watts is enough to drive 2 Ultra wide SCSI HD's, 3 IDE HD's, a floppy drive, Ultra Scsi CD-Rom, Scsi CD-Recorder, two fans, dual-processor system for myself. Reason is, not all of those devices are pulling full current all the time. If I was running RAID, they'd be going non-stop, and constantly pulling over 300 Watts, but they probably rarely approach that on a home computer.
However, it doesn't hurt to buy a higher wattage power supply. Also, if it's a good brand it probably will run a little cooler, and we all know heat is normally what destroys electronics.
