Default BMW Welt megastore opens in Munich today

BMW Welt megastore opens in Munich today

BMW has invited over 800 guests and press representatives for todays grand opening of the new BMW Welt (World) just outside of the carmakers headquarters in Munich. The ultra-modern steel and glass structure will be used to promote BMWs cars and is described as a car delivery and experience center. Whenever somebody comes to pick up their new car, theyll be required to wait on a grand stage before it ascends on a rotating platform ready to be driven away.

The new facility stretches over 73,000 square meters and was designed by Viennese architects Coop Himmelb(l)au. A key element of the design is a twisting glass tower thats supposed to represent BMWs early-20th-century origins as an aircraft-engine supplier, reports the WSJ.

As competition for luxury cars heats up carmakers need a new way of promoting their vehicles. BMW previously opened a BMW Werk factory in Leipzig back in 2005 and arch-rival Mercedes quickly followed with its own Museum in Stuttgart the year after. Volkswagen has its famous glass factory in Dresden and Porsche is set to open its own Museum next year in Stuttgart.

The doors for this latest BMW Welt will be opened to the public on the 21st of this month.

Yeah, solar cells on the visitor center and on the parking spaces, but none on the factory.
The whole building is a PR thing, even the solar cells.

^^^uhhh, solar cells these days, in that quantity, can pretty much offset the power costs associated with that building. Solar cells are a FINALLY becoming a big deal, and are becoming huge in Germany. If I had the upfront cash I would plaster my roof with them and watch the power company pay me as my meter spins backwards!!! PR thing or not, HUGE props to BMW for investing the money into making the building as green as possible. As a Landscape Architect I can say kudos to them on that design, and I would love to visit that building someday!

As green as possible? What is the thermal insulation value of glass? The whole thing looks like it is made of metal, high-intensity bulbs lighting it up like the core of the sun, HUGE open spaces, I could go on just from those snaps. But yeah, it looks really cool and the architecture is nice (albeit very sterile).
