Default E-brake light randomly coming on in BH...

I’m wondering if anybody has had this problem before. I have a BH (2003 L-SE) and my e-brake light keeps coming on in the mornings when I first start driving (only seems to be when it is cold and the car has sat for a while), I never use the e-brake, so it shouldn’t be hanging up. It will come on as soon as I start driving, when I stop at a stop sign or light, it goes off, then it will come back on as soon as I take off. It does this for a few miles, then it will go off and stay off. It just recently started doing it, so I’m kind of confused about what is going on. If anybody has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you.

Do you have an aftermarket headunit or nav system that taps into your ebrake wire?

I've had experiences where power will bleed back thru the lines and illumintate the light, although your situation does sound different as it eventually goes away.

If i rember correctly when my brake light would come on. It was due to low brake fluid. Check your level.

I have an aftermarket headunit, but it has been in there for about 2.5 year and I used a harness that plugs into the factory harness, so it should not be that.

Well the pads are shot, I am actually changing my brakes on Friday. The light just says “BRAKE”, the same one that comes on normally when you pull the e-brake.

I ran out and checked the fluid, it is down a little, it is right between Min and Max.

Last year, I had the exact same problem like yours.

I brought my car into the dealership, figured out the front and rear pads were too low and kinda mess up with the pressure of the brake fluid

Changed all the pads, never had that problem again

That's good to know! Hopefully when I change my brakes on Friday that will fix the problem.

Thanks for the help everybody!

all of the above is good advice.

I've got another possibility...the gf just had a similar issue with intermittent ebrake light on her WRX...ended up being the switch which the dealer claims is a common issue. They also claimed it is sensitive to humidity. I think the switch was under 20 bucks.

Hmm, I will have to check that out if changing the brakes doesn't fix it. Where is the switch located?

I would assume somewhere near the actual ebrake handle.

At least as far as the older Soobs, yes, the e-brake light will come on if the fluid is low.

But if the fluid is also old and too full of moisture, that will trick the sensor in the MC into thinking the fluid is low, which will again make your e-brake light come on.

I'd be willing to bet money that if you had a brake system flush, that light would go away.

I have fresh fluid, new pads, etc... My light comes on when it's cold - and it usually stays on until it gets warm again. And it did this before and after the brake refresh.

My vote is for the switch - I KNOW that is what's up with my '93 Turbo leg. I just haven't gotten in there to lube/replace it yet...

My brake light has been two things in the past, one the fluid was low, and two my ebrake would in heat or cold not come in contact with the switch to turn it off.

Well I changed the brakes earlier tonight. The light didn't come on at all while I was bedding them in, so it may have fixed it, I will take it for a drive in the morning to make sure...

that happened to me cause i had NO pads left. i thought it was an ebrake problem, changed my pads and rotors before i was going to go to the dealer and the light went off haven't seen it since, also haven't let my pads get that low again. it made a horrible grinding sound, was on the metal.
