Default If I were to get into a horrific car accident and died, what/w happen to my things?

The "Will" thread got me thinking...

I don't have a will, nor am I married... lets say I die tomorrow, what would happen to all my things? Like my cars, guns, and other belongings. Does it go to my family? Does the Gov't take it?

How does it work?

Sorry, <---- Uber n00b

Your guns would be confiscated by the state, most likely.

Looks like I'm getting a will written soon! With my luck I'll get hit by a rogue garbage truck on the way to the place...

Your parents get it. Or if they're not around, brothers/sisters.

You know what sucks?

A bunch of guns that I have are considered "assault rifles" by the state of CA and I am the sole owner... If I die, no one can take them nor can I sell them to anyone in CA! I can't even hand them down to my kinds! How lame is that?

I could however sell them out of state.

Legalzoom.com...takes 10 minutes and $50 or so.

IIRC your 'next of kin' would be entitled to it. But in a lot of cases your assets would be liquidated and then given to them...

Write a will. If you don't, as indicated above your belongings go to the state under probate, are liquidated, the state takes a larger cut than they would otherwise, and they would then send what was left to your next of kin (if able to be found). In some cases it would become the property of the state (based on state statutes) and sold at auction and they would retain that income.

The hassle and intervention of the state should be avoided at all costs. Freakin death taxes
