Default Water pump replacement at second timing belt replacement?

I just scheduled service for timing belt replacement at my local dealer (Mastro Tampa) and the service tech said the water pump doesn't need to be done until the second timing belt replacement. I'm all for saving money and not doing things that don't need to be done, but this goes against what I've commonly understood. Has anyone else heard this?

Water pump: $300
Peace of mind: $?

...it's up to you.

edit: This is to say that it could be fine, could be not. I'd replace it, personally.
