Default Help... can't get brake line off the hard line

2006 wrx wagon:

I can get the stock brake line off the hard line because there's no "hex nut" to grab onto!

The stock brake line, wear it connects to the hard line, seems to have 17mm collar which is use to hold the line in place on the chassis bracket. The collard is the only thing that seems to have anything to grip. BUT the collar is incredibly soft!! I can only grab it with a crescent wrench due to the angle and strut and wheel well liner getting in the way. I have a box wrench on the 10mm hard line's hex nut, no problem. But the stock brake line has nothing to grip.

How the heck to you get this to release?

Unless something's changed on the newer cars you don't need to wrench anything on the flex line side - it is prevented from turning in the bracket by 'flats' on the pipe fitting - just turn the hard line flare nut

Once it's disconnected THEN you pop the flex line out of the bracket

EDIT: see Peaty's excellent thread on Scoobymods

Yes, this is key. Also make sure you use a flare wrench on that 10mm nut, it's the best (and sometimes only) way to get it loose without stripping it. A torch helps too if it's really stubborn.

Thanks!! Got it off. I didn't realize that the nut spins freely from the hard line; but won't spin freely until it's cracked from the brake line.
