Default PERRIN - 2008WRX: Building The Exhaust

Click Here to return to the links page

Goal: Create a 3” exhaust system….. that’s quite!

Built like our other exhaust systems, this system features mandrel bent 3” 304 stainless steel tubing, along with a 3” straight through muffler. Though this was a prototype, it will be seen by lots of people so I end up polishing the tubing to better represent what the consumers final product would look like.

In some of these pictures you will notice the system is bolted to an OEM exhaust. This is a new feature we are incorporating into our new exhausts. This allows then end user to buy just the muffler, for a little more sound, buy just the center section to get more power while remaining super quiet, or purchase the entire exhaust system and get the power and sound.

Another great feature everyone will see is our new V-band connections. This provides an adjustable and gasketless (new word) connection.

The transversely mounted muffler of the 2008 WRX is different than any other prior Subaru exhaust. Subaru did this to cut down space needed behind the rear wheels to help shorten the car.
While this adds more complexity to designing the system, it also adds a new “look” to the back of the car. Now you can see the entire side of the muffler and the huge 3” tubing.

On a side note, all the emissions related items (like the charcoal canister, and evap control solenoids) are moved to the inside of the car under the trunk's floor. Subaru moved this more toward the middle of the car to get more weight centrally located in the chassis.

Even the gas tank is under the back seat, not behind it! Again more weight moved to the middle. All of this makes sense as the car (in stock form) seems to rotated better and handle better than previous models.

is there anyway to delete some of that piping? like an angled exhaust straight to the right? or would it have to be mufflerless? (new word haha)

There is a way to take some of the piping out. The only thing is it forces people to buy a complete exhaust and spend more money. With ours fitting to the OEM parts allows guys to buy 2 less expensive parts when ever they choose.

But we are going to offer a muffler system that is mufflerless. This would be just the back section of exhaust. It would be a cheap way to get some cool sounds from your car. Our first proto of this sounded really cool!

Weve been using those clamps on ACFT for awhile now. Lots of fun to properly torque.

I think once the STI comes out, and more people mod the 08, it will make people want them more. But if you haven't gone and sat in one, i would suggest it. They are very nice inside.

They are great! And while the lock nut makes them not the quickest connection, they sure do work well.

Will Perrin be making an exhaust system like that for just the Hatch version of the WRX? Or will they also release a similar system for the sedan?
