Default 2.2l Engine whistle at high RPM

Hello,
I have a 1997 OBS with 185000 miles on it and it is making a weird noise. The engine will whistle at high RPM. I can drive the car half throttle from 0 to redline and not hear the noise but at about 3500 or so if i am at full throttle the engine will hiss or whistle. it sorta sounds like a tea pot heating up. the noise stays the same pitch until it hits about 5800 than it changes to a higher pitch whistle. Does not seem to have anything to do with the speed only RPM. My Mechanic said it was nothing more than air coming in through a hole in the firewall but speed has nothing to do with the noise so i thought i would put up this post and see if anyone knew anything.

It's nothing major, my legacy did the same thing. So no worries.

-Is your intake completely stock?
+Look for the air intake silencer box in the fender. Without this, it'll whistle
-Are you running a K&N stock replacement filter?
+Mine added to the whistling noise generated by removing the air intake silencer from the fender.

Hope this helped.

My 97 OBS does the same thing. I have not been able to find an intake leak, and the engine seems to run fine. The only other things I've noticed is the exhaust sort of makes a putting sound....and the gas mileage is so-so. 19-22 mpg in city with 10% ethonal

At around 100k miles, I remember hearing a whistle. I didn't bother to conciously look for it...

but after I changed the midpipe and axleback I noticed it was gone. :shrugs:

My 98 L has a whistling kind of sound around 2500-?? at one point the rest of the engine gets too loud for me to hear it.. I'm pretty sure it's intake related cause if I take my foot off the gas for as little as a second it goes away.. then when I push the gas again it comes right back... No clue where it's coming from either.. everything is tight..

I just replaced the intake with a cone filter but not a complete intake, just the filter. my gas millage is also bad 18-20 in the city. the noise was there before and after i replaced the filter. the intake in the fender is no longer in use but it is still there. I don't know if no one thinks its anything problematic i will probably just leave it alone even though it gets annoying at times.

Question PLEASE HELP 2.2 won't start

I just completed some major work on my 96 2.2 Impreza. It won't start at all now and I have a question:

I knocked one of the teeth off of the center timing belt sprocket while taking it off. Would this alone affect the sensor and cause the engine not to start?

Also, please give me a definitive answer on how to line up the camshaft pulleys and the main center sprocket (referred to in question 1) to set the timing correctly.

I am a newbie, and any help would be greatly appreciated. This site has helped me alot in this process.

Regards,
-Joe

It's definately going to cause a problem. I have a few spares if you need one, PM me. The timing marks on the cam pulleys line up with the notches on the backside of the timing covers.
