Default 225/40 R18 . . . . 215/40 R18?? help please

So I tried searching but am kinda retarded when it comes to doing searches and tires so I appologize if this has been answered somewhere else.

I currently have 215/40 R18 tires on my car but am looking at some new wheels that someone has for sale which have 225/40 R18. My tires (215's) have a lot more tread on them and am I curious to whether or not the tires could be swapped safely?? If you need any more info to answer my question let me know.

sorry again, I don't know much when it comes to tires/wheels.

thanks!

i'm having the same dilema about to purchase some JDM 12-spoke sti wheels. they are available in 17x8 or 18x8. if i get 17's i'll just go wih the stock sti tire size of 225/45/17. if i pick the 18's i'm guessing i'll go with the standard +1 routine which would be 235/40/18, right? feedback?

not really
225 will do fine for 8" rim, very common choice for 18s

To keep the overall diameter about the same as a 225/45/17 you would need to go with a 225/40/18.

Looking on Tirerack, most 215/40/18 tires list the approved rim width as 7-8.5". So the 215 tire will fit a 8" wide wheel just fine - but you may not like how they look.

I concur
even 225s don't look sufficient for 8" sometimes

alot of people say subaru should of used a 235 for the stock tire on an sti. I just don't want to upset anything and have to get an alignment any time soon or put more stress on anything by going too wide or too large of a wheel. I think i'm going to stick with 17's but unsure of which size tire. I'm thinking of getting the jdm wheels in 17 and putting another pair of re-070's on there. or maybe the new re01-r's ?
