Question 1991-1994 legacy squeaky speedometer

hey guys,

the speedo on my friend's '94 legacy is squealing like mad. hell, i had to take a double take to make sure it wasn't a loose a/c belt.... squeak, squeak, squeak, and then constant squaaaallllllll.......

it sounds like it's coming from the cluster.... how do i take the instruments out? i looked and i see a couple of screws above the gauges, and a couple in the radio area... but it is still not coming loose... damn noisy speedometer.... but, it does have 273k miles on it... my chevy lost the cable before 100k...

tia,

-bry

i gave up on taking the dash apart to get at the cable. instead, i just popped the little metal clip off of where the cable goes into the transmission. it's really easy to get to as its accessible from the top on the passenger side of the engine compartment. next, i tried to pull the cable from the cable housing, but it wasn't coming (hence the squeak). i used pliers on the drive tang and turned it clockwise while pulling.... eventually it came out and was gunked up pretty bad. so, i wiped it down with solvent, coated it with white grease and stuck it back in the cable housing. it didn't go in very easy, i had to sort push/pull and twist to ream out whatever crap was in there. good news is, the squall is gone and it cost nothing. additionally, it only took about 10 minutes for the removal, clean and install.

+1 on the speedo cable. That's pretty much the only thing around that that can have a real mechanical breakdown...

Both times I have had the tranny out recently, the speedo has been the only thing that has given me problems afterwards.
