Default Interesting noise (rear diff?) from dead stop

When I am at a dead stop and begin to let the clutch out, I get a fairly low-volume clanking sound from the rear of the car. In other words, at about the engagement point, as the car starts to roll forward, I hear a sound vaguely like two glass bottles clanking into each other. I don't think it's in the transmission; maybe in the rear diff.

If I start in 2nd rather than 1st, the sound is louder. And sometimes I even hear it while upshifting 1-2 (generally during slow acceleration).

I figure it's just slack getting wrung out of the driveline. Anybody else experience the same? Any thought what else it might be?
