Question My car is running BETTER with the CE light on..!!??(kinda long)

Hi all,

Could someone possibily shed some light on this situation.

A little history first. Back in december i had my CE light come on, so i took it in (to a dealership) and they plugged it in and the code led them to a minor exhaust leak just before the muffler, i mean right were the muff clamps onto the pipe. Now this is a cat back i had made up out of 2.25" pipe and a simple universal SS DTM muffler. They told me that i would have to put the car back to stock for them to do anything.......I guess they couldn't see that just 1.5' away there were 2 HUGE holes in the muffler (Twin 3" tips )
So i'm really just trying to outline the some of the grap i've gotten from dealerships about this.....bear with me, please.

Ok, i've been driving around threw the holidays with the CE light on, i know not good, but here's the thing.

THE CAR RUNS BETTER WITH THE CE LIGHT ON........?????????

Just 2 days ago, i reset the ECU after installing some stereo equipement (more on that in the stereo forum soon) After the reset the car was running like crap, major hesitation from 4k to ~4800 rpm (MY99 hesitation issue)
I decide to re-pad the knock sensor like i have done in the past. So i made some new pads out of an old bike innertube and proceded to instal them under the KS and re-reset the ECU....

Well it STILL RAN LIKE CRAP.......so i'm gettin quite pissed by now...the CE light stays off for a few driving cycles (peroids of running engine) and it comes BACK ON......

The STRANGEST part of all this is that just AS SOON as the CE light comes on, the hesitation goes away, the part throttle roughness goes away.....the CAR RUND GREAT WITH THE CE LIGHT ON......????!!!!!

I'm pulling my hair out here. I'm going this week to get the CE light issue fixed, but could someone help me understand this sick and twisted phonomon.............??

Thanks very much,
Peas,
AaRoN

Wierd. I have no advice for you, just figured I would answer since you want something in here! Have you tried putting the stock cat-back back on and seeing what happens? I have no idea, never heard of anything like this before.

Maybe think of it this way,

Everytime you reset the ecu, it begins it's learning cycle.
At just about the point where it figures out it's base map.... it also figures out that something is wrong with the engine. Voila. At that point, you simultaneously get a better running engine and a CEL.

Yeah, this idea is far-fetched... but it may have some basis in reality (yes I understand that the ecu doesn't go from stupid to smart just like that, but you get the jist....)

Don't quote me on this, but I was under the impression that when the CE light is on, the car usually runs richer than normal (I could be wrong, though). Could it be that with the particular exhaust set up you have, that when the CE light isn't on, the car may be running lean, and having the CE light on kinda richens things up to the point where it drives better? Maybe I'm way off base here, but maybe not . . . who knows?

Another idea...

When your cel isn't on, and you're leaking some exaust from the holes in your muffler (causing some wierd flow issues throughout the piping maybe), your oxygen sensor may be getting wierd readings and sending them to your ecu, causing it to alter your fuel delivery or whatever and in return, it runs as you described.

Then, when your ecu figures out theres something wrong with the exaust, it bypasses the input from the oxygen sensor and runs on some default setting causing it to run fine (because it isn't getting erroneous readings from the oxygen sensor).

Crazy idea, probably, but it's a possibility. Try plugging the holes in your exaust and resetting the ecu and see if that does anything. Or as someone said, put your stock exaust back on and see if it does the same thing.

jhonas,

the "holes" i mentioned are the tips themselves. The "leak" is very minor and is were the stainless muffler clamps to the regular pipe....
Thanks for the input though....

No, the engine should be running off of normal maps (and the 02 sensor) even when the CEL is on.

I had a problem with my fuel injectors and my can ran better with the CEL on also. i found out that when the ECU sences a problem or problems it trys to correct it. Some problems are possible for it to correct, some airnt. But if i were you i would take it back to a dealer and have him hook up the select monitor, get the code again and try to figure out the problem from there.

If I was you I`d trade it in. I've no need for it now I have my two impreza's. Just take it to Albany and get a WRX in return.

You will get 8,875 on a trade in against a WRX at invoice (23,200)
Leaving you 14,500 to finance which will be 250 over 4.5 years (plus what eva you owe if you do), So better do it now before your no longer employed.

Oh yeah
