Question 02 WRX 4EAT Issue: Car won't move in Drive or Reverse when cold. Loud humming too.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone has had some experience with the infamous WRX 4EAT weirdness. From the searches I just did, I can see that there are a gambit of issues with our WRX automatic transmissions that may resemble my problem or could be leading me down the wrong path.

When I start my car up in the morning, I usually let it warm up, but sometimes I am in a hurry and just shift into Drive or Reverse. When I take my foot off the brake pedal to allow the car to coast, it doesn't move. I have to tap the gas pedal a bit to get the car to move. When it is warmed up, it's less severe, in that it hesitates for a second and then goes, but when it's cold, the car just doesn't go unless you hit the gas. This sometimes happens at a traffic light where I stop, and then step on the gas again, and it hesitates for a second. The latter is not as frequent, though.

In addition to this, there is also a loud humming noise coming from the transmission or front differential (somewhere up there) whenever my foot is on the gas pedal. My mechanic said it was the transmission because the sound only happens when the gas pedal is engaged, and he said its normal for cars with high mileage (100k miles), but it just doesn't seem normal to me, as it is really loud. I know its not the typical rear diff humming noise that people have documented, I used to have another bugeye with the rear diff noise, and this is totally different.

I'm not sure if the two issues are related but it seems likely given their proximity to each other and the inconsistency of WRX 4EAT quality.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

When was the last time you had it serviced? Check the fluid and smell it to see if its burnt.

have you checked the fluid level when the car is warm?

Per factory service manual -
Drive 3-6 miles to warm up the fluid from cold (104-140F) (I drive for at least 10-15 minutes to make sure the fluid is in the 'hot' range - 140-176F)
Park on a level surface
Select each shifter position (P,R,N,D,3,2,1) and put back in park
Leave car idling for 1-2 minutes
Check fluid level (dipstick next to the intercooler on the driver's side)
Fluid should be above the center of the upper and lower marks when hot or below the center of the two marks when cold.
