Unhappy my car (or hopefully just my battery) is dead!

Here is the story.. my car was running fine all day until going up slope of a highway, I down shift and then both hand brake and battery light are on. The car was still running fine except my dash light a little dimmer. My headlight and my 55W driving light are ok.

I keep going and get back home to pick up my wife (can still turn on/off car) and go to father-in-law for dinner... Right off my garage.. my cd player prompt me to re-enter password (sign of battery disturbion). And then another 3km going fine and then tach. and speedo. meter are off and then the car hesitate and finally die.

I called road side assistance and he told me that my original battery is dead, he re-charge my battery for a while and then my car is on and drive back up to driveway (the hand brake/battery light are still on).

Some info about my car:
less than 4.5 years old with 82000km or 50000mile;
got a set 55W driving light and run the relay off wiper fuse (I used to run the relay off headlight but if I downshift hard (rev to 5000rpm), I think there is current spike and blow the headlight fuse. After 3 times, I run the relay off wiper. I also just swap out the x-drilled rotors and put back the oem one on 7 days ago (should trigger hand brake light, right?)
No other heavy electrical stuff.. was planning on upgrade the headlight harness and put on 80/100 headlight.. I guess maybe not then...

Right now, battery is off and will do battery check first thing tomorrow and get new battery if necessary.

later..

Ernest

This sound like your alternator has gone bad. The 97 Legacy's had a recall on there alternators so you might want to have that looked at. I hope this helps I have had this problem on two of my Subaru's.

white knight is right. Go to the dealer and get your free alternator. You might want to put the factory pulleys back on. You also should run the light relay directly from the battery.

Have a Nice Day? Damn electrical problems.....

I had a similar problem. After picking my car up fro the body shop, I went to Micky D's, and right a the parking lot, my car died... I thought, Damn! those body shop guys left the lights one...1) battery or 2)Alternator. There was a recall on the alternator, and I keep neglecting to take it in and get it swapped. Well, when AAA came, he did a check, and nothing registered. After couple more tests, found out that the battery was dead. we kinda stood there for a while, and thought.... ok new battery. Works fine now. he told me that 4 and half years on the same battery is pretty amazing. So, try a new battery.
and also maybe consider replacing your voltage regulator.

Do you have a aftermarket pully? I hear that those do whacky stuff to your electricals. :monkey:

Can I get a free alternator? I've got a '98 with the original. It works fine, but free is a great price.

I'm so greedy

I don't know if the alternator recall apply to Canadian one. I will sure find out, thanks!

For the driving light relay, I mean I use the wiper as a triger to turn on the relay, yes, it gets all the power direct from battery.

Default Recall was in Canada too.

I took my 97 Legacy GT in for the Alternator Recall last year... you should have got a letter in the mail from Subaru telling you about the recall.

Over this past summer I took my car to a different dealership to have some minor maintenance done before I left for the beach, and they replaced the alternator in my car, a 1995 Legacy. I am 99% sure that the alternator was not recalled on MY1995 legacies, however it has been on some model years. Oh well, I did get a free alternator.

My car is nearly 7 years old, and I'm still going strong with the original battery. I am running an aftermarket soundsystem with 2 component amps from this battery too! If your battery is completely dead, it's most likely caused by a failing alternator.

Just a word of caution (a rant actually), do not go to Falconi Subaru if you live in the Pittsburgh area. I was EXTREMELY disappointed in their service. i went in for a "quick" oil change and tire rebalance. First, they rotated my tires instead of balancing them. Then they ended up replacing my alternator which was never recalled AND took my black license plate frame off the car and replaced it with a fugly white frame that says "Falconi Buick Chevrolet Jeep Subaru" - all without consulting me first. I went in for an oil change and ended up spending 3 hours waiting for them to play around with my car! If you want a good dealership, go to Langston (formerly Bianchi)

I know for sure the 97 and 98 Legacy's had the alternator recall, but not sure on the 99's. I still need to go get my new one becase I can and it's "preventive" maintence

Yes, by all means, go get a new alternator if you can, the car just loss power gradually and finally dead, I always though if the car is running, it won't die.. now I know it can because the alternator never re-charge the battery. I was lucky I was driving on small street, it wouldn't be nice if I am on freeway.

Yeah it sounds like the altinator. You're pretty lucky. When mine died it killed my amps with it. They tend to put out a lot of garbage when they finally go. Even if there isn't a recall, it's about a 100 dollar/30 minute fix and the voltage regulator is built into the altinator (to my understanding). I just changed my original battery to an Exide due to the MN winter coming, if I were in canada, I would defintately be doing that, hehe, especially after cycling it down all the way like that. But at any rate, the altinator is a good bet.

W3rd!

I would get the alternator replaced under the recall. You should also get a new battery. The battery you have now has been drained below a certain percentage, and will not charge back to its full capacity. You can change it now and not worry about it, or get stranded some where, when it won't start.

So I'd replace it.....just my 2 cents.

finally, my car is in the dealer parking lot.. what a long day.

sigh...how can I miss the letter of recall! I hope they don't charge me for the new battery because I didn't bring the car back for recall soon enough (I never bring the car back to dealer for service, I think it is a ripe off, checking this and checking that every 6000km and $$$$$$.... I just change the engine oil every 6000km).

Thanks for everyone to read my story! I am glad that I didn't post in general impreza forum.

Legacy owner rocks!!!!!

Ernest

PS. Cajual, where did you bring the car for recall? I took it to Willowdale.

I take my car to Scarborough Subaru (Eglinton & Midland).

Do you know any Canadian distributors that sell springs/struts (or any parts) for the Legacy? I am looking to upgrade my suspension this spring, but hate paying for all the shipping charges & exchange rates. I found a subaru dealer in Quebec that sells aftermarket parts, but would love to find one in Ontario.

Chris.

Cajual - there's always western Canada iON Performance has stuff for the Legacys. In about 2-3 months, there'll be one distributor of iON Performance stuff in Ontario, so keep your eyes and ears open

LOL!!
BJamerican: Sorry for laughing at your experience but I can't believe they did that. To go to the trouble of actually swapping licence plate frames is nuts. I would have been SO PISSED.

Anyway......back to the topic.

It's the alternator. Happened to me in my old Mazda. It was as if someone unplugged it while I was driving.
