Default question about roof racks....

hey everybody. so i'm putting my rack on pretty soon here. anyway, so anyone with an older yakima sst towers or yakima Q, or maybe thule racks
does the clip just come right over the plastic trim stuff that goes around the window openings? is it pretty strong? i've also looked through that custom yakima thred and i'll be doing something like that maybe too.

last question, how far are your towers apart? thanks dudes.
Andy

You want to spread the towers as far as possible to maximize load spreading capability. The parts usually come with instructions for recommended spread and locations.

they are very strong and will not pull off you car at all as long as they are installed properly. There are weight limitations due to state laws due safety. typically 165 lbs. which you will have nothing to worry about.

the weight limitations are also because the roof of your car will dent with too much weight...don't ask me how i know this...unless you have a wagon with the rails

Yep, around the plastic. Use the included black tape so you don't mash up the plastic. Also, get some 3M clear bra tape and put it on your car where the towers touch. Even with that plastic, any dirt or dust will rub on your paint. Same for the tabs that touch your fairing (if you have one). $10 for a 12"x12" square and that's plenty.

Get a friend to help you out and place the towers on the car. Keep everything loose and find a good distance for everything. Then, tighten away.
