Default Road Test: 2008 Volkswagen R32 (Road & Track)

Road Test: 2008 Volkswagen R32 (Road & Track)

Quote:
R&T's Doug Kott recently drove an R32 in Italy and praised its civility. Now we've driven the 250-bhp all-wheel-drive Rabbit on home turf, and you know what? We're similarly impressed, even after testing it on a speed-sapping 95-degree day.

That's when the VR6-powered R32 hit 60 mph in 6 seconds flat and the quarter mile in 14.6 sec. at 95.0 mph — bettering a standard GTI by three-tenths in each instance. With the R32 having 50 more bhp than the GTI and all-wheel drive, we thought the gap might be wider, but the car is 300 lb. heavier owing to its iron-block engine and awd hardware. This heft also took its toll in the slalom, skidpad and braking, where the standard GTI posts slightly better numbers.

But the R32 is a delight to drive. Its chassis is tight and nimble, and although some prefer a manual over the standard DSG, we agreed that the interior is rich, befitting a more expensive car. Then again, at $35,430, the R32 is an expensive car. Regardless, all 5000 R32s for 2008 will be snapped up, for exclusivity alone.

WTF.

I was expecting the acceleration times to be unimpressive, but the slalom, skidpad, and braking distance is worse than a GTI? What the hell is the point, then?

No sale.

3720 lbs yet people are crying about the new GT-R being 3800? Gah indeed.

VW spends a lot of $ on advertising to give the impression that its cars are "sporty." That simply isn't the case as this latest road test proves. What it really makes is expensive comfortable cars that look pretty good, and if I was in the market for that than the R32 might make sense. Otherwise I agree, this has very little appeal at that pricepoint.

The curb weight on VW's website lists the R32 as 3547lbs.
Still a big, under-powered, fat pig of a hatchback in every sense of the word.

I really do not understand what the hell they(VW) are thinking.

What a mediocre POS. The 135i is supposed to come in with a very similar pricetag, with M sports pack and six pot brembos standard. And it weighs 300lbs less. And it has 50 more HP with two turbos. And it even has a roundel on the hood.

I love the "machine turned aluminum trim" that looks like the reflective silver stickers you got at the roller rink as a kid. BARF!

Finally, indisputable proof that tossing tuner parts at a car indiscriminately can make it worse.

Well, in defense, my weather stripping came off my WRX after 2 sessions on Summit Main...

So its only about as fast as a WRX. Its certainly much nicer inside though. The DSG has to add something for some buyers as well.

I'd buy it over a $29k WRX with a NAV system, but not over a $25k standard WRX.

You guys do realize some WRX's are going for $29k without a sunroof, etc. Cars are just getting expensive.
