Default I'm I the only one who thinks the new Impreza interior is cheaper than the old one?

I sat in a 2007 and then a 2008 back to back, the interior material of the new 2008 is so much cheaply made than the out going model. There are acres and acres of hard plastic. I felt the 2007 used better material with soft plastic on the dash and the doors. I think cost cutting is the result of it. To me hard plastic just feels very cheap.

is the plastic harder? yes....but how often did you touch your dash? as on owner of an 08 who had an 06 before the interior feels much nicer overall, the look is more modern and the fact that it's a lot queiter makes it feel more upscale as well.

I totally agree. I greatly prefer the interior of my '05 over the craptastic '08 interior.

The doors really bother me in the 08's, and the dash is "meh" at best. What's going to suck is the non standard radio opening.

I agree. I was talking to some subaru techs at a dealership and they all said that subaru has cheapened a lot of things up. I was not impresed at all by the new impreza up close. If anything, more disapointed. As far as better sound dampening......who cares? I bought wrx for a sporty car. I would have got a lexus is if I wanted quiet. It just adds more total vehicle weight. This is all my opinion though so take it as you will.

The '08 has better assembly, but cheaper materials.

That maybe true. I'm deciding between the new STI and the BMW 135i. I don't expect the STI to have BMW interior but at least use some soft plastic and better material than the out going model.

I have sat in both and would probably prefer the 07 interior... but I can see where the other camp is coming from

I like the 08 interior more except for the position of the stereo, I prefer my stereo below my vents. I also like my seats better than the 08's. Besides that though, 08 is overall nicer. My interior is nice for an under $20k car too though so I'm not complaining.

I don't care for the new dash layout what-so-ever. HVAC controls and vents, radio position, and gauges all seem wrong to me.
  • I don't like how the instrument cluster looks pinched in between the horizontal vents.
  • Don't like the weird swooping angle the dash from both sides takes to center.
  • The HVAC controls look very odd, offset in a V-pattern, forming the bottom "line" of the lower dash.
Overall, I don't the interior style/aesthetic belongs in an impreza. Looked okay on the tribeca, for what it was. The current impreza interior design looks as confused and amalgamated as does the exterior... this coming from someone who has grown to appreciate the new exterior aesthetic.

Here's hoping I come to appreciate the interior design as much as everything else I do like about the new model.

The interior reminds me so much of the Legacy now, so I have no complaints. Only thing which could become a potential issue is the material of the seats. Just looks like a pet hair/random crap magnet.

My girlfriend just traded in her 06 STi for an 08 2.5i (waaayyyy to many money troubles) and I really like the car. The new cabin is quite nice and to me doesnt feel like im in a Subaru which is a nice change of pace.

the door cards and the dash feel cheap as hell.

the gauges, seats, steering wheel, radio (or nav) look and feel much nicer.

overall, i don't like the interior. the cheap(er) plastics on the dash and the doors really jumped out at me when i sat in an 08 wrx the other week.

and just because everyone is overusing this smiley....

I think they improved the design from a looks and space perspective, when it came to the 08. The 08 looks really good in photographs, with a modern, updated look and purely from an interior looks perspective, has gotten closer to the Legacy.

But when it comes to actual tactile feel, the 08s (Imprezas) use cheap, hard, hollow plastics all around. Definitely saved money for Subaru, over the 07s/06s. If we need to understand what a high quality interior design is like, without going over the top with expensive materials, all you need to do is to sit inside a $15K Honda Civic. The Impreza is certainly not Legacy grade and nowhere close to Honda Civic grade either.

I get the same cheap feel of the 08 Impreza, when driving the lower-end Chevys (Aveo etc) and Pontiacs, in rental cars during business trips, where hard, cheap plastics rule the roost. But then since that is a rental, and out of the box is priced as a bottom-feeder, it does not bother me much.

The interior of my '05 OBS is one of the things that really sold me on the car. Don't get me wrong, I was already going to buy it, but it was a great perk that the interior was nice, clean, and simple. I don't like a lot of unnecessary flair and curves around the interior, and the standard, easy to modify dash (especially the clock pod and double-din stereo) really fit to my needs for interior modification. I'll never buy a car that I can't slap in a new stereo w/o having to get a cheap metra replacement panel.
