ok, so i want to shave all the emblems on the trunk of my 02 wrx, and all i know is that to start the procedure, you apply a little bit of heat from a blow dryer or something, then use floss to scrape the emblems off. From what i have seen, after taking the emblems off, there will still be some residue from the "glue" left over on the trunk. how would i go about getting that extra residue off without damaging the paint? thanks for the help.

I used 3M Adhesive remover when I did mine. Worked like a charm.

All the suggestions above are good. A couple of things I wanted to add:
1. Use a hair-dryer and NOT a heat-gun. A heat-gun will be too hot and could do some permanent damage to your paint or clear-coat. 2. No matter what chemical you use to remove the leftover adhesive, be sure you wash off the area with soap and then wax the entire area. 3. Take your time. You rather take your time, than rush it and then accidentally damage the paint or clear coat. Good luck! |

I have found that the older the car is, the harder it is to take off the glue. On my car (2002), it took me a few hours of applying goo gone, letting it sit for a while, then rubbing it with my finger. After I had all the glue off finally, I could still see the outline of each letter that I could not get off. By that time, I was sick of doin that stuff, so i just stopped there. Over time, the outlines finally disappeared. Just make sure that you leave yourself with a few hours of daylight atleast (unless you have a garage).

after i shaved the emblems off i used goo gone for a little bit to get the "foam" off. then i used isopropal alcohol swabs to get the rest off. after that i used that 3m adhesive remover. it took a long time, but it was well worth it.

Kiss up to someone at the local body shop. I know the owner of a local body shop who removed the hood emblem off of a dodge intrepid for nothing. They said they have a chemical that takes it off great, but the person I talked to did not know the name of it when I spoke with them.

you could just take it to a body shop and they will do it for cheap.. i know becuase im a painter and i did it to my 02 wrx... i just scraped them off, used a "rubber racing wheel" to take off the glue which is the circular driven magic eraser the guy above me was talking about...i dont really agree with it just *erases* the leftover adhesive because the rubber leaves a residue itself, that will not come off. all the cars i paint when i take the emblems off a panel i have to paint, i have to wetsand the rubber residue off before i paint. it doesnt mess up the paint. just wont come off with anything i had.. so when i used the "rubber racing wheel" i just wetsanded the rubber resiude from the "rubber racing wheel" off, then buffed, glazed, and waxed my trunk. which a smart shop would do too. came out smooth and looked like black glass.

de-badging is pretty simple. but it is easy to put the old finger nail scratches in the clear coat. warm them up w the old hair dryer ( I wish I had hair), then double up some floss and work them off. sometimes if you go slow, you'll get more of the tape off. I like to open the hatch and then lay on the Goo Gone, allow it to sit for a good ol while. 3m adhesive remover is also good. there used to be a plastic thing called a widget that I still have that if you use it care fully, you can use it to urge off the gum, otherwise, it;s your fingers. then a good wash of the area, and a polish with the PC. Then your wax of choice. I did mine the day I picked it up; I couldnt see the paint for all the letters! :-)
