Default Have a job interview on Thursday, by phone, what's the deal with that?

Well as some of you have experienced applying for jobs is time consuming, stressful, and a pain in the @ss to say the least. Likewise, if you have ever applied for government jobs you know that you can send out 30 resumes and never hear anything back. I currently work for the government and have begun the process of seeking a new position at another agency. Thus far I've applied for two positions. The first one didn't pan out, but low and behold I have an interview for the second one this Thursday.

What's throwing me for a loop is that it's a phone interview. I always thought that face to face interviews was the norm. Now does anyone have any experience with a phone interview? Is this just a prescreen or is this my one shot? Any pointers on how to prepare?

Phone interviews are very normal.

It's quicker and easier for the manager to talk to 10 people on the phone than to try and arrange face to face meetings, and lets them weed out the jerkwads.

If the phone interview goes well, expect MAYBE another phone interview, but probably a face to face.

A lot of "first interviews" are by phone these days -- it screens out the wheat from the chaff.

Make sure you have a quiet place to take the interview. Maybe in your car if at work. Avoid traffic sounds and dogs barking.

I've had 2, they suck. I can't talk at a phone. The interviewer usually remains silent. I find it hard to communicate with no cues from the other person. I begin to ramble.

That says a lot about you, unfortunately.

I'm always great at interviews, phone or otherwise.

I think I'm pretty well versed at talking to people on the phone considering that's a big part of my job at the store I own. I am a little worried that this guy will be silent and not have that many questions. I can keep things going as long as I am being directed to a point.

The one thing that I have working against me is the fact that I want a new job in the worst way so I really care a little too much about it going well. Doesn't lend itself to being nice and relaxed for it.

No, that's not good.

I got the best jobs when I didn't care.

I'm not a very open/expressive person by my own admission, what do you think it says?

That you probably shouldn't have a job that requires dealing with people?

Exactly, the job I currently have was applied for almost on a whim. I liked where I was, but wanted a good career position. I applied not giving a crap and went into the interview telling myself that if I don't get it then I will just keep my cool job for a while. This one is different, because I really want to get my career going again. It would be a nice promotion for me with a career track to the next promotion level beyond that one in a year or so after I start the new job.

I did phone interviews to get my internship. I first interviewed with 3 people and then ended up talking with 2 others. Granted the company i was applying to was 2000 miles away and i was just an intern.

I would say that this could be a norm these days. With the fact that many people would rather text then call, or email then call, or either then face to face. So i wouldn't be surprised if industry would go to something like this, at least as a first round. It also will depend on the job and the pay out if they are willing to fly or pay for you to go somewhere for an interview.

Good luck!

Thatís pretty normal. I have a friend that has spent his entire career in government work (state/local). Many of his initial interviews are by phone.

In my industry the initial interview is always by phone. Itís more like a phone screening. Itís just to see if the candidate is worth wasting four to five man hours on in a real interview.

Phone tests your skills and reaction time without the prejudice of seeing your face, also saves time and can weed out the bad apples
