Default Any California legal catted downpipes?

Hi, I live in Chicago but plan on moving to CA within the next year. I want to get a downpipe for my car and would like to get one that's CA legal if there is such a thing. Are there any and if so is there a list of legal dps anywhere? Tried searching but didn't find anything specific. Thanks.

NO there are not any legal catted dps. In california we have a visual test in addition to the sniffer. All visable parts need a carb eo#. there is one dp made by daddysscp that uses a CARB legal cat but the dp itself is not legal.

What i'm going to do is install my stock dp when its time to smog.

yah, I don't know why maddad has a carb legal cat while the dp is still not legal lol. but as they said it is a step to possibly getting the whole thing legal (which i highly doubt).

^the good thing about the maddad unit is it looks pretty close to a stock downpipe and you may pass visual...

Any modification to the factory catalytic, removing the factory catalytic, or moving of the catalytic from the factory orientation is illegal.

With that said, stick with your stocker, pass smog, and install an aftermarket unit. WHen the time comes to re-smogging, swap it back..

You could also get the Bosal downpipe that retains the third and final cat in the factory exhaust system. It looks relatively stock, and will give you a performance boost.

If you have over 80k miles you can have a aftermarket cat.

It's not very hard to find a guy who will pass you on visual. As long as you pass the sniffer I mean.

How does it work in CA? Is the test done by a private garage that's approved by the state? Do you have to pay? How often are you tested?

In Illinois we're lucky, you can have any equipment as long as you pass the test, they just plug into your OB II port and get some readouts, it's done at state owned and operated testing stations, I think every two years. Don't have to pay. I think it's only required in the Chicago area too, rural areas don't need to do it. No safety inspections either, which strikes me as a little nuts.

Test is done at private garages. Yes you have to pay and you have to get it tested every other year. If you buy a brand new car, you don't have to do it until the car is 4 or 5 years old.

^^ Additionally, they require a smog test if you sell your car to a private party.

False. You can only have an aftermarket cat if your OE one has failed and is out of federal warranty.

false. It has to be an aftermarket that is CARB approved.
