Unhappy another head gasket repair cost

I've read a few threads on here about head gasket repair costs but my question is about what additional work should be done while the engine is out.

My 02 Stage 2 WRX with 80k miles has had all the head gaskets fail to varying degrees.

The shop is estimating $4600 in P&L (would be $2400 in P&L JUST for a basic head gasket repair)

Here are the things they want done that I'm not sure of:

All hoses and lines
they say that removing the engine stresses these components
that the coolant and oil lines could be contaminated with head gasket material
Oil pump
Water pump
thermostat
radiator
Clutch

Thanks!

clutch

that must just be because it would be easy to get to while the motor is pulled.

I have heard that subaru warranties head gaskets for 100k that what a few people at subaru told me one being my friend so i dont know if mods would void this but check into it.

My God! for that price I'd buy a JDM 2.0 STI motor and install it myself. That's about 1/2 of what your car is worth. Might be better to dump it and buy something newer.

They said a clutch job on the car is about $1000 so I should replace the clutch now. Is there a way I can inspect the clutch to see how much life it has left? And is it really a $1k job??

You should look for a more reasonably priced shop.

As I call around I am finding that out. :-(

I am asking them to itemize all costs, and then I'll probably have the car towed to a reputable shop in a nearby city, and post the details in my regional forum to warn others.

Get an used engine with low mileage or STi engine for that price.
