Default PDXTuning wins the Tsukuba Time Attack Challenge

This weekend at Laguna Seca Raceway PDXTuning won the Tsukuba Time Attack Challenge. . By winning the challange, we will be taking the car to the famous Tsukuba track in Japan!

It was an amazing event, with all of the Subaru teams lending hands to keep everyone on the track. We had an engine failure at noon on Saturday, and eventually got ahold of Ken at Cosworth who agreed to meet us at their facility in LA and sell is a new Cosworth Long Block on Saturday night. Thanks COSWORTH!! Jarrad and I hopped in the car and drove the 12 hours round trip to get the motor, while Dustin, Chris, and crew pulled the current motor out and stripped it down. When we rolled back into Laguna at 12:30am, They jumped right on the engine and rebuilt and reinstalled it, working thruout the night outside, in the rain. Now that is DEDICATION!. By 6am it was fired up, and my 9am the car was ready to hit the track. I have never seen that kind of dedication and ability to work without sleep.

Here are a few pictures from before the event, getting the PDX car converted from the USCC trim to the race trim. The one with the stripped interior was taken just 5 days before the race. Sleep was not included that week for Dustin, Chris, and Jarrad.

Lined up ready to go!

Off to race..

Strapping in...

This is what the car looked like at 12:45 AM, after Jarrad and I arrived from Driving down to LA to purchase a new Cosworth Long Block. At this point, in the dark and in the rain, Dustin and Chris started swapping parts from the original block, and installing it back in the car. It fired up again right around 6am.

Nice car build up. But shouldnt you guys tell the whole story? How you can be 7th fastest, 2rd fasted Subaru and still win? GST didnt qualify since they didnt show up Saturday, but honestly they have proven they are a Top Subaru in the US.
You make it sound like you spanked everyone that showed up. Just keep it real.

Both JIC and AMS were able to run low 1:31's in the final practice session just before the final Time Attack round, but were not able to duplicate those efforts in the Time Attack. Had they been able to duplicate those times, we would have had 5 cars separated by a total of .4 seconds. AN EXTREMELY CLOSE CONTEST!!!

They might have got a DQ from the sound restrictions in place, seems many people had that issue.

They had cooling issues and were never able to complete a lap in competition.

I wish my car was prepped enough to run in the street class competitively, let alone unlimited. Maybe at the end of next year =/

Either way, much props to you. There is a lot to be said about a team that can get their stuff ready for race day. A lot of teams were having issues -- including PDX.

While your implication is clear, there is more to the story then what you are leading the horse to. The GST car was indeed very fast. So was the Easystreet car, and the Crawford car. However a number of interesting problems crept up for each of the competitors.

I generally think about what I write, and I read what you wrote several times. I'm not sure what exactly I said that indicates a "spanking". The title indicated that we won the Tsukube challenge, which we did. The text in my post described the work we did to keep things going. I don't recall seing any text talking about how fast any cars were, or how the competition did. I did mention in other posts how much effort all of the teams put in. Clearing reading the results you can also see how fast some of the other cars were. What you can't see from that list is how many of those cars only ran a few laps because of mechanical problems, or noise limit problems.

The finish order you posted isn't even close to the whole story. The sportsmanship of all of the teams outweights the numbers, at least in my book. At the end of the day, we ended up being the ones holding the bag. A small difference in a few small variables could have changed things for all of the teams, not just GST. Fortunatly, the organizers took the high road of sticking to the rules published instead of doing something political. The efforts of all of the teams was amazing, and the orgainzers did their best to keep the competion moving.

Cheers,

Jeff Sponaugle
