Rev-matching is only good for making sure the car doesn't get really upset when you clutch out (like sudden decelleration in the middle of a corner). It does absolutely nothing to protect your synchros. The only way to lighten the load on the synchros is to double-clutch, which sully has explained.

When you upshift, the clutch-side of the tranny has to decellerate to match the speed of the output-side of the tranny. This is easy on the synchros, since it will happen anyway given a little bit more time. When downshifting, the clutch-side of the tranny has to accellerate to match the speed of the output-side of the tranny. This is hard, since the only way to speed up the clutch-side is for the synchro to speed it up through friction. Speeding up the clutch-side of the tranny through double-clutching gets it up to or above the speed of the output side using the clutch, which is much bigger and much tougher than the synchro.

CN - If you wanna save your synchros, double-clutch on upshifts.
