Performance wise the 97 gt is a better option but be careful, turbo motors to N/A cars are a wiring nightmare.

You could swap the EJ257 into your 97 Legacy GT then turbo charge.

I'm doing a similar swap except with a built bored/stroked 2.2turbo block that is now 2.4 litre.

If you have the time and money, swapping the 05 Legacy GT turbo motor into your '97 Legacy sounds like an awesome swap. I would contact http://www.EastCoastSwappers.com and ask them about getting a new wiring harness for such a swap and ask them what else should be done. You will likely need to use a newer intrument cluster, and the turbos ECU, cross-member, up-pipe/down-pipe, fuel tank etc... (far more complicated then you might at first think).

im about to do the swap tomorrow on the lgt. I have the crossmember and the fuel pump. A 04 sti ecm on order that i will have reflashed. I need a lgt/sti gas peddle (for drive by wire) right? Also I think im going to get a new balkhead harness (from the dealer) that i can splice into. is there anything else that i need to know about?

what crossmember are you using? I went w/ the early model legacy turbo crossmemeber and it worked just fine. You say you are doing the swap tomorrow? Just a heads up, we have been working on my swap for a few weeks (granted its hours at a time not days at a time) and Ive got a subaru tech working on it with me but you dont seem overly concerned about it? Also, the wiring is a real pain in the ass. I ended up sending mine to a guy on here name zephyr who had an extremely quick turn around time and did it for a great price (much better than ECS or rallispec who I was in contact with as well). I'm not sure why you are buying the harness from the dealer? can you not find one on here or some other forum anywhere? That sounds like its going to cost you a fortune. Just make sure you dont go into this thing thinking its an easy job, because as we did you will run into many hickups along the way. Goodluck with it.

i should say im doing the easy part tomorrow putting the engine in. the crossmember is from 91-94 legacy turbo. i thought it would be easyer for wiring if i had a new and complete harness. they said the harness is 530 dollars. i know its going to take some time to do. my friend is an electrical engineer hopefully hes some help
