Default Does your 96-98 legacy have EGR?

I'm trying to find if any OBDII DOHC EJ25D Legacy's did NOT have EGR.

I put a 98 EJ25D engine/ECU from an AT car in my 97 Impreza. The engine has EGR but the car has no wiring for it so the ECU gets a an EGR CEL. For yearly inspection, I want to find an ECU from a donor car that does not have EGR, but will properly run my EJ25D for a few days to get it inspected.

The only information I have so far is that the 97 Legacy 2.5 automatic may not have EGR. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Thanks!

I think it does...but it may have different wiring, hence your problem.

I dunno, my '95 EJ22 has EGR, I believe all the OBDII cars do.

Automatic EJ22 cars in 96-97 have EGR, 5spd EJ22 and EJ18 cars don't, all are OBDII. Maybe all EJ25's have it? On smaller engines it seems transmission dependant.

You could probably run the engine with the 2.2 ECU so that the ECU wouldn't be expecting the EGR.

only other ECU I have is from the EJ18, tried running the car on that...

Not sure if it was the injector size or timing differences but it ran like crap, couldn't even maintain the 50 mph to get the ECU into the ready mode. And it smoked, a lot, way too rich. I might have to try to get a 2.2 ecu just to see if its any better, but I'd like to get a closer match.

My 1996 2.2 with a manual has no EGR system. Mine's a single port EJ22 if that makes a difference.

this is actually a very good question to ask! maybe we should all take a quick look at our cars and report back? see if we can come up with some usable statistics?

That would be usefull info for all. I'd be happy to compile a list once we get everyones input, but I'm still specifically looking for OBDII 2.5 legacy's w/o EGR.

I currently have a JDM EJ25D that I got off Ebay in my car. It does not have EGR. The driver side head does not have the port on the back of it, and there's no provision for EGR on the intake manifold. I'm running it with my USDM ECU, so it occasionally pops a CEL for the lack of EGR. (All the EGR stuff is wired up, but it pops a code I think because the ECU doesn't see a change in manifold pressure when it triggers the EGR solenoid.)

The USDM '97-99 2.5GT does have EGR. I've only owned 5-speeds, so I can't positively say the 4EATs have it, too.

Interesting. You're probably right as to why it gets a CEL, according to the wiring diagram the EGR wires tap into the IAC sensor/recirc valve. Otherwise I was going to try to just wire the EGR directly to the ECU harness.

Okay, I'm wondering what all those extra hoses in the intake system are if they're not EGR.

Besides the obvious idle air bypass line.

There actually isn't much to the EGR system, a valve and a metal pipe from the head to the plenum. Lots of coolant hoses to keep stuff warm that probably doesn't need to be, maybe that's what you're thinking of.
