Read it somewhere here on nasioc (yeah, yeah, I know )

I'll see if I can find it again, but I won't make any promises.

Edit: I just did a google search for Mobil 1 shearing in a Subaru application, and plenty of stuff comes up. That said, I didn't find much in the way of technical data, mostly hearsay. There are a few oil analyses that do pop up in the search results, but I don't know enough about reading them to tell you what they mean.

Reasons to worry:
1) If the oil is in fact shearing from a 5w30 to something approaching a 5w20, that's bad, especially with a horizontally opposed engine. Increased engine wear is pretty much the guaranteed result (if this is in fact the case).

Reasons to tell me to go pound sand:
1) This is apparently an issue mostly with Mobil 1 syn 5w30. Their 0w40 is thought to be ok.
2) Most of the threads where this pops up as an issue are turbo related. The oil temps in a turbo car are much higher, and thus harder on the oil. I can't say it will be a non-issue for the N/A crowd (without technical data), but it may be worth a second look.

Also, The Shell Rotella Syn is highly regarded.

Now, having said all that, I still use cheap dino oil in my car and just keep up with the changes. I'll likely get an oil analysis someday, but I'm not too worried yet.

Always used Mobil 1 syn.. but changed over to Subaru synthetic a few oil changed ago.
I get the same thing too. Mobil 1 has been good for me though. I do check my oil often as well as change it. Surprisingly, I see no oil loss nor do i have to add.

Hey people with the Tsudo N1...

I put the tip silencer into the exhaust for the cold mornings, but noticed a LOT less people have noticed me around and almost got hit twice because I was in their blind spot...

Only issue is, I cant get the silencer out!!! I've tried driving hard without a bolt... Nothing. Tried using WD40 to loosen it, and drive hard... Nothing.. I tried yanking on it too.. Nothing!

What should I do??

Have you tried pulling it out while cold? If not that get something with a hook on the end?

Also, not to sound like a dick, but maybe it's a good idea to NOT drive in someone's blind spot?

Ill try tomorrow morning. Im trying to find a hook, but most are too brittle (plastic), or are too big to fit in the silencer hole.

I wasn't trying to. Traffic was building up, so I was surrounded. couldn't do much.

Bend a metal coat hanger into a hook and use some vice grips as a handle.

Tried this, not strong enough as it bends back as you start pulling.

I used to cross my hands and put two fingers on each side of the inner part of the silencer and pull out as hard as I could.

I called up my local muffler shop and they said they use all flowmaster. I think I'm going to have them install a dbx muffler within the next two months.

Anyone have experience with any other flowmaster products?

I had a '85 Honda Prelude 2.0si back in the day that had 89k miles when I got it, and 155k miles when I sold it, with original clutch, and I drove that harder than I ever drive this Impreza.

I think it's just what it smells like when it gets hot- or it may be burning a little oil, but not enough to see the difference on the dipstick. Edit* -Or maybe oil burning off something down there from when guy at Subaru dealer spills oil when changing it, that only gets hot enough to burn the oil if I really run the thing hard.. That's possible too.

My car is hardly just broken in.

OIC.. Yeah I was talking about just going up a hill at medium or high rpm..

It is weird though.. it used to worry me, but not anymore. Happens to quite a few people.

If you bent the coat hanger into a V at the end and it is straightening out you are really stuck. As a desperate try you could always use a large dent puller with either the hook end or a long bolt attached to the nut from a butterfly bolt (like they use on drywall). Maybe the sharp banging will loosen it up enough.

Neither have I, it's not really dark enough to be noticable enough by the police

I've had an inspector say my widows are dark and friends have also said the same but, I think it's the perfect percent. It provides ample privacy without being too dark to see out of at night.
