timing belt. HG are possible, but less likely than previous GTs.

belts are the biggest worry at that mileage. HG is an issue, it wont blow up spectacularly like the previous gen but you'll see coolant leak.

Yeah - if you don't have documentation that the timing belt has been changed, change it. While you're in there, you might as well do the water pump and radiator hoses.

wohoo! if the timing belt hasn't been changed in the last 10k, do that as soon as you buy it.

you could ask the seller to take the price of the parts off the price of the car... you know crank and cam seal, rear main seal, new headgaskets, timing belt, idler pulleys, just go crazy with it.

Default 2001 legacy gt stuff

Here is a break down per my 2001 legacy with 140K on the ticker

Timing belt $400 at 110K

When in there having the timing belt done the dealer told me that it wasn't uncommon to replace the oil pump - mine was clean - dealer actually commented that it was the cleanest 2001 legacy they had done the belt on as of yet. He asked what sort of oil I ran in it -- I said synthetic every 6K -- he said it was quite obvious that it makes a difference.

My external Head gasket leak was done by Subaru - not a cheap thing to have done by the way. In my case I took the car in before the standard warrenty was up and mentioned that I could smell coolant once in a while - they didn't find anything. 15K later I had the usual external leak -- Subaru stepped up to the plate and said no worries we'll fix it.

Subaru rocks!! I was so close to selling it and buying a non Subaru given I was pissed off about the HG issue. I kept the car and our next car will be a subaru no question about it.

Clutch!! -- I just had ours replaced at 140K - dealer said that he is seeing the legacys come in for the clutch between 110K and 160K on average with some coming in earlier pending who is driving them. The thrust plate is not resurfaceable and adds quite a bit of cost to the clutch replacement. $1400!!! So be sure to check the clutch good. In my case the main bearing started squealing before the clutch was clearly slipping - though it had shown signs of slipping a little at times. Granted I had 140K of stop and go commuting and even some boat towing which probably killed the bearing.

Other than that the car has been bullet proof and one of the best cars for the money that I've owned.

On another front I need to replace my O2 sensor and the catalytic converter which was damaged many years ago due to a chunk of ICE off a truck which I wasn't able to dodge. Cat finally died this past year so now I'm in a bit of a hurry to replace it and the O2 sensor to get smogged.

Have fun with the Legacy!! Great damn car for the money!!!! Hope to get two more years out of ours - guessing it will be pushing 200K by then.

(165 KM / 10) * 6.2 = ~ 102,300 Miles.
