Question Heat Shield Removal?

Okay, a while back I posted that I have a heat shield that is rattling. It is on the "Y" pipe. The dealer could replace the entire pipe (incl. shields) for the low, low price of approx. $250. No thanks. The dealer apparently opened it up re-packed it and clamped it shut. Two weeks later...rattling again.

Next stop....rigged the shield by placing a spacing nut between the exhaust and shield. Rattle stopped...for two weeks.

Now it's back and worse than before.

Is it safe to remove a heat shield this close to the engine? Should I be concerned about melting the rubber boot for my steering which is relatively close by? Or should I just rip the m-er-f-er off and forget about it until I save $$ for the Brullen header back from Ion Perf?

Peace,
Oqui

My car only has heat shields on the cats. The rest have been removed 1 by 1 as they started rattling. You may want to be carefull when parking on dry grass if your car is lowered, but other than that you should be just fine.

Just like Pleiades, my heat shield has been removed bit by bit... first when I had my Borla Headers installed... then just recently, the rest of it off the Cat... about time too... I forgot how the car sounded without the rattling!

Cool Thanks

Thanks, I feel better about taking them off now.

Just a few more months and I'll be calling Ion Performance for a complete header to tip system!

Peace,
Oqui

This is an old post, but a common problem. I have a couple of fixes for rattling heat shields which have worked for me. I have repaired these rattles with the high temp two part epoxys and also drilling small holes and using rivets. These holes drilled on the edge of course where the heat shields are attached along the seams. I have done this on my 96 Jeep ZJ and have a rattle on the 2000 obw at the y pipe I need to take care of. You could also use a small bolt on this as well depending on which heat shield this is. This can be a very annoying rattle for sure.

very common problem.. I had the same issue.. just took it to a shop and asked them to put a couple tack welds on the shield. Stopped ratteling for 2 years straight. I have another shield that just started rattling the other week. I'll do the same thing shortly. The shop didn't even charge me for the 5 minutes of work.
