Timing is making out with a hot drunk chick BEFORE she pukes.

Knock means someones at the door, and they don't know how to ring the bell. It's usually sounds like bouncing a basketball on a wood floor.

Very basic answers

1) when the spark plug ignites the air/fuel mix in the cylinder in relation to how close the piston is to the top of its stroke

2) when the air/fuel mix inside a cylinder ignites before it is supposed to

Knock sounds like metal marbles inside the engine. A very rapid metallic clacking. Not to be confused with the clicking that the valves make.
