Default STU Legal? OEM Fog Bezel, No Light (Ram Air)

Ok, So if I have a CAI in the fender, can I have an OEM fog bezel (factory option) with the flight removed to provide air to the filter element legally in STU?

Technically, it is a function scoop/vent = ILLEGAL

Also Technically, it is a STU legal intake with OEM optional body modifications (less removed fog light, which is also legal)

If you can replace your bumper covers with those "combat-style" craptastic bodykits, I don't see why this wouldn't be legal.

Anyone ever see something like this at nationals?

+1 This sounds like a legal modification to me as well.

I've placed 1st at maybe 4 or 5 events between NYR and NNJR this past season in STU.

I do it on mine. Difference is, I actually have fog lights and have removed one of mine for events so it's a "removing a fog light" mod as opposed to a potentential "adding a vent" mod. Unless you're in nationals or in a super competetive (read anal) area, they probably won't care at all.

Bump this up because I am going to Devens National Event and I don't want problems. Any SCCA vets care to comment?

I might just swap on my fog light cover for the event and count on the little slit in the OEM fog light cover for cold air just to play it safe.

I say not legal, IMO.

F. Addition of spoilers, splitters, body kits, rear wings and nonfunctional
scoops/vents is allowed. The intent of this allowance
is to accommodate commonly available appearance kits, and
replicas thereof, which have no significant aerodynamic function
at Solo speeds. Body kits are limited to bumper covers, valances,
side skirts, and fender flares. Standard parts may not be
removed except for the substitution of spoilers, rear wings,
bumper covers and valances. Rear wings must attach only aft of
the rear wheel centerline. Total surface area of all spoilers, splitters
and rear wing may not exceed 5 square feet as seen from
above (see 12.9). Substitution of rear spoilers or wings must
retain any original third brake light functionality unless otherwise
equipped. No underbody panels may be added or substituted.
The drilling of holes for the purpose of mounting these pieces is
permitted.

C. The air intake system up to, but not including, the engine inlet
may be modified or replaced. The engine inlet is the throttle body,
carburetor, compressor inlet, or intake manifold, whichever
comes first. The existing structure of the car may not be modified
for the passage of ducting from the air cleaner to the engine inlet.

Most all aftermarket bumper covers DO create larger openings to critical cooling areas like the radiator, intake, etc... Such openings could be considered functional and thus illegal. This is an extreme interpretation. Additionally, the OEM fog light cover has an existing vent/scoop. So changing this to a fog bezel type is not an addition of a functional scoop, it is a modification of a existing vent/scoop location.

This fog bezel inlet doesn't require structural modification.

Regardless, the argument against this type of intake in STU is too strong. It can be read both ways but for a national event, it isn't worth the hassle of a protest. I'm definitely going to throw on the OEM fog light cover for the event to play it safe. Thanks for the input!

you could also email seb@scca.com for a clarification.

I am no expert and hate a lot of the rules anyway.

BTW, if someone did protest you over this I would be HIGHLY surprised. It would be a huge weenie protest.

I wouldn't be surprised, even if it came from a non-STU competitor. I've stirred up some ***** with some NESIC / NER SCCA members in the past.

I like the idea, get Doug (is it still Doug?) to clarify, and then run it at a national level event.
I want to see how far we can go with the bumper cover allowance in ST.

Emailed Doug. We'll see what he says, but I probably won't run like that regardless.
